The Songwriter Equity Act was recently introduced by Congressman Doug Collins; the Act updates the Copyright Act to allow for a “rate court” to consider other royalty rates as evidence when evaluating digital performance rates, and also addresses a fair rate standard for mechanical licenses. The act is supported by ASCAP, The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), BMI, NARAS, and SESAC. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler also made an appearance at a lobbying event for the act, which was attended by a number of congressmen.
