Highpass Filters for Clarity and Headroom

Want maximum clarity in a mix, especially one where there were a bunch of open microphones, such as a live recording?

Use a highpass/lowcut filter on each track to remove any unwanted low-frequency material. Set the filter slope/Q as steep as possible, and set the cut-off frequency as high as you can without affecting the desirable material on the track.

You’ll find that cutting out any low-frequency noise on your tracks with a highpass filter results in greater clarity in your mix, and in increased headroom.
