Guitar of the Day: ESP LTD George Lynch Signature GL-256

In 1985, George Lynch was in Japan and searching for replacement guitar parts. What he found was ESP, a company that made fine, handcrafted electric guitars and within one year ESP had their first artist model guitar, the George Lynch Kamikaze. Since then, ESP’s roster of artists and artist model guitars has grown immensely, including several other George Lynch models. The ESP LTD George Lynch Signature GL-256 is part of ESP’s LTD line, which aims to bring their designs and quality to an affordable, production instrument.

This guitar stands out among George’s other ESP signature models in several ways. Initially, the radical, 2-tone Distressed Burst finish catches your attention with a vintage vibe that is very different from George’s other intricately detailed signature ESPs. A second look reveals a three-pickup guitar with a pickguard, three controls, and a top-mounted output jack; all of which differ from other Lynch signatures. There’s even a six-screw, vintage-style Floyd Rose Special tremolo, a huge departure from the Floyd Rose Original trem that is Lynch’s go-to. All of these features add up to a guitar that is unique for ESP and George Lynch.

The contoured, double-cutaway alder body is cut in ESP’s Mirage style. The maple neck has an Extra Thin U Neck carve and the maple fretboard has jumbo frets and a 25.5″ scale length. This guitar feels sleek and fast right out of the box, keeping in line with its shredder namesake. The ESP-designed LH-150 humbucker in the bridge position has the right amount of output to coax liquid lead lines while balancing well with the single coil, LH-120 pickups in the middle and neck positions. The 5-way pickup selector and volume/tone/tone control configuration bring versatility to the GL-256. Sonically, this guitar is equally adept at everything from bell-like cleans and throaty blues grit, to rock chunk and full-on high-gain shred tones.

From his earliest work with Dokken and Lynch Mob, to his current work with KXM, George Lynch has blazed a unique style of guitar playing and crafted instruments to complement it. Whether you’re a fan of Mr. Scary or you need a versatile, fast-playing, traditional-looking guitar at a very budget-friendly price, the ESP LTD George Lynch Signature GL-256 has you covered.
