Guitar of the Day

When Paul Reed Smith invests his valuable time and energy in designing a brand-new guitar, you can be sure the end result will be something quite special. And despite the fact that it has about the shortest model name of any guitar we can recall, the PRS 513 is not just special, its extraordinary! Imagine an instrument that can take you from single-coil spank and sparkle to hot humbucker heaven with just the flick of a switch. The 513 delivers that and a whole lot more, thanks to a revolutionary set of five specially designed pickups, which can be used individually or in all sorts of combinations, for a grand total of 13 vintage and modern sounds. Actually, thats how the guitar got its name: Five pickups with 13 unique sounds. The way this works is simple, yet the result is arguably one of the most tonally versatile guitars on the planet. One 3-way blade switch lets you select between Heavy Humbucker, Clear Humbucker, and Single Coil modes, while a 5-way blade selects the bridge pickup, bridge and middle, middle, middle and neck, and neck only. Essentially, the two switching systems interact with each other to deliver virtually any electric guitar sound imaginable. And since it’s a PRS, you also get features like a highly figured, carved maple top or what PRS calls a “10-top” (the best you can get without moving up to an Artist Series or Private Stock instrument) over a solid tropical mahogany body.

We have six PRS 513s in stock right now, three of which are 10-tops. First up is a trio of 513s finished in Black Cherry (which is one of our favorite PRS colors), along with Black Sunburst, 3-Color Sunburst, and Whale Blue examples, all of which have the carved maple 10-tops! Whichever color you choose, you’re getting a great-looking instrument, particularly since the PRS stains are so rich and their UV-cured gloss finish is absolutely flawless. The 513 is the only PRS guitar to use a 25.25-inch scale and a 10-inch radius fingerboard complete with those trademark PRS birds, only these are the new, more contemporary gold-hued mother-of-pearl birds, rather than the abalone PRS uses on its other models. The finishing touches include a silky-smooth PRS tremolo tailpiece that stays in tune even when subjected to some pretty intense whammy bar action and gold hardware on the 3-Color ‘Burst and Whale Blue finishes (the others have nickel-plated hardware. Of course, your new PRS 513 includes a plush-lined, deluxe hardshell case and free shipping right to your door via FedEx!
