Today’s official Guitar of the Day is a Paul Reed Smith Custom 22 with a rare one-piece flame maple 10-top finished in Emerald Green. We must admit it took us a while to accept a green finish, but now we find them to be quite stunning! Okay, it’s probably because we recently saw Santana in concert playing an Emerald Green PRS, and like most guitar players, we are swayed by instruments our favorite guitar heroes play (and we’re not ashamed to admit it). As most of you already know, the Custom is – and probably always will be – at the heart of the PRS line, although the company unveiled a number of significant new models at Winter NAMM. Customs are available in 22- and 24-fret configurations, with the 24-fret version being dubbed (no surprise) the Custom 24. If Emerald Green isn’t your color, we also have quilted maple 10-top CU22s in Tortoiseshell, Tobacco Sunburst, Scarlet Red, and Amber, as well as flame maple CU22s in Royal Blue, Ruby, and several more in Emerald Green (but without the one-piece top).
You probably already know that PRS guitars are about more than looks. Just as much effort goes into making them sound and play great. The sound comes courtesy of a pair of Dragon II pickups, which strike the perfect balance between vintage and modern tones. These are the exact same pickups PRS used in its wildly expensive Dragon Series guitars (and in fact, the Custom 22 is really a production version of the Dragon, but without all the mind-blowing inlay work). The neck on today’s Guitar of the Day is given as Wide-Thin, although all PRS guitars have superbly playable necks. Naturally, it has a rosewood fingerboard with those trademark PRS abalone bird inlays (the new 2008 version, which is more like an outline). A 5-position rotary pickup selector lets you choose the warm, smoky crunch of humbuckers, but also splits the coils in series and parallel to give you that glossy sound normally associated with single-coil pickups set to the “in-between” positions. Gold hardware and a silky smooth PRS vibrato complete the picture. This awesome Custom 22 comes in a plush-lined hardshell case and includes free shipping right to your door via FedEx.
