Guitar Of The Day

The Taylor T5 is, quite simply, in a league all its own. When you need the sound of a great amplified acoustic on stage – or even in the studio – the T5 delivers. But there are lots more sonics under the hood, because the T5 also delivers some of the best electric guitar sounds, as well, starting with the T5 CMR air-coil rear pickup. This is the only pickup you can actually see on the top near the bridge of the guitar. When played through an appropriate amp, this pickup can go from Tele-like spank to Gretsch-like twang to a full-blown humbucker lead sound. Meanwhile, buried in the neck joint, the T5 Dynamic neck pickup can sound warm, rich and woody or fat and downright rowdy. Mix the two and you get all sorts of exciting combinations for any style of music. But then there’s the T5 Dynamic body sensor, which was inspired by all the research Taylor engineers did when developing their critically acclaimed Expression System. The T5 body sensors produce the sparkling highs, complex mids, and tight lows you’d expect from a premium acoustic-electric design. The onboard preamp delivers a wide range of tones in every switch position.

Inspired by the Taylor Grand Auditorium silhouette, the T5 features a hollow carved sapele body with a neck of tropical American mahogany. Like all Taylor guitars, a custom-voiced soundboard is at the heart of the T5 tone. On both the Standard and Custom models, a spruce top delivers an outstanding tonal range with superb sustatin. Stylized f-holes enhance the resonance and the appeal of the T5 body. Both the T5 Standard and T5 Custom models are available with optional premium tops of stunning flame maple or outrageously figured Hawaiian koa in several outstanding stains and finishes, including natural. The Taylor T5 Standard comes with chrome Taylor tuners and subtle “micro dot” fingerboard inlays, while the Taylor T5 Custom has gold Taylor tuners and Taylor’s exquisite Artist inlays. Here’s an in-depth look at the T5, complete with audio files that demonstrate this guitar’s enormous range of sounds.
