The Gibson Custom Limited SG Elegant Quilt Top is a great example for “forward thinking” by a major guitar manufacturer. While the SG was born in about 1961, it hasn’t changed much in over 40 years. That’s not a bad thing when you consider how perfect the SG was from day one. But Gibson looked at current trends and realized that the one thing missing within their SG line was a real showcase instrument. So they decided to build one. The result was the Custom Limited SG Elegant Quilt Top. The company had originally done the same thing for their iconic Les Paul and since, historically speaking, the SGs came after the first run of Les Pauls, the move was both natural and smart. The Custom Limited SG Elegant is truly eye-popping!
Essentially, Gibson took their top-of-the-line SG, then put a gorgeous swirling quilt maple top on it. This one is in a deep, rich Blue Burst finish. Next they added real rippled abalone position markers to the fingerboard, but they wisely kept the one thing SGs have always been famous for: Their super-fast-playing solid mahogany neck, which joins the body right at the 22nd fret. As you can imagine, this allows easy access to the upper frets during solos. For pickups, Gibson made another smart choice and added a pair of ’57 Classic humbuckers, which are amazingly accurate replicas of those original PAF humbuckers. Finally, the SG Elegant got the standard time-tested combination of an ABR-1 adjustable bridge and stop tailpiece. It’s worth noting that all of the metal parts are gold plated and that this guitar comes in a plush-lined Custom Shop hardshell case and includes a certificate of authenticity, custom care kit and other case candy.
