Guitar of the Day

Remember that feeling you got when you first flipped open the latches on your first “real” guitar’s case. Well, you can feel exactly like that every time you open the case and lift out a Paul Reed Smith Modern Eagle II! It’s as much a piece of art as it is a musical instrument. In fact, this is as high as you can go in the PRS line without moving all the way up to a Private Stock guitar. For the Modern Eagle, Paul Reed Smith and his staff developed a number of rich new stains that really bring out the beauty of the fantastic maple tops for which PRS has become famous. Often, a specific guitar might get two or even three applications of a stain before it’s time to apply the final clear coat. This has the effect of making the flame or figure really pop out of the maple top, so it has even more of that amazing 3D quality. What’s more, for the Modern Eagle II, PRS decided to go with a special high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish. It enhances the maple tops and will eventually give these guitars the warm vibe of a vintage instrument, since this is the finish used on many of the most in-demand (and expensive) classics from the 1950s and ’60s.

The feature list is top-of-the-line PRS and starts with a carved, highly figured maple top that’s artist quality or better (only a Private Stock instrument will have a nicer top). Then there’s the select, buffed-out 22-fret black Dalbergia neck and the new “J” bird inlays, which consist of green abalone surrounding iridescent Paua heart centers. The carve on the neck is wide-fat, which allows you to really dig into solos, as well as grab big handfuls of chords. The guitar is equipped with a pair of sweet-sounding PRS 1957/2008 pickups with brushed covers. For an in-depth discussion of these remarkable pickups, see our “Word for the Day” section. The switching is borrowed from the original McCarty Series, so you get a master volume, a master tone with push-pull coil tap, and a 3-way toggle switch. All the hardware comprises a combination of hybrid gold and nickel, which looks fantastic. A guitar this special doesn’t come along every day, but if you’ve been considering the purchase of a premium guitar that will last you the rest of your life, then the new PRS Modern Eagle II might just be it. We have them in stock right now, in Red Tiger, Yellow Tiger, and Charcoal, all with the silky-smooth PRS vibrato tailpiece. What’s more, each includes our exclusive 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™ and free FedEx shipping right to your door.
