Today’s Guitar of the Day is a new model from Gibson that provides tons of vibe, maximum playablity, and a comfortable package, at a price that’s affordable for all of us — the Midtown Standard P-90. The “Vibe”” part of the equation comes from a pair of P-90 single-coil “soapbar” pickups with Alnico V magnets, one at the neck and one at the bridge. Capable of everything from snarl to crunch to twang to fat sustain, these pickups provide the voice of the axe.
The “playability” quotient comes from the ’60s Slim Taper neck shape — an easy to manage carve that’s just right for both rhythm and lead work. The “comfort” is contributed by the downsized semi-hollowbody form factor — smaller than a “standard” ES-335 size, but slightly larger than a solidbody. With the semi-hollow design, the Midtown Standard P-90 resonates like crazy, creating a rich, vibrant tone. The guitar is wrapped in a sleek nitrocellulose lacquer finish in Pelham Blue, Heritage Cherry Sunburst 2, or Vintage Sunburst 2 colors.
Other details? A solid (not laminated) mahogany body and neck, a rosewood fingerboard with a 12-inch radias, a chrome Tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece, master volume and tone controls, Grover Keystone tuners, and an included hardshell case.
It’s the ultimate hybrid crossover between an archtop and a solidbody guitar!
