It’s funny now to look back and see how certain colors were all the rage in the early days of rock music. In the 1960s, if you bought a Gibson, you wanted it in the popular Cherry finish, while a Fender was either Honey Blonde or 2-Color Sunburst. Then along came Gretsch with its bright Amber Red (now almost universally known as Gretsch Orange). Today there are dozens of colors available that range from conservative to totally outrageous (like Neon, Coral Mist, Double Frappuccino, and Violet Burst). For those who prefer something colorful, yet still tasteful, today’s Guitar of the Day is a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 in Vintage Yellow. The carved, figured maple top is lighter in color than the company’s Amber finish, plus it has a nicely contrasting deep cherry mahogany back, neck, and headstock. The top is a beautiful piece of maple that has earned itself the prestigious PRS “10-Top” designation. You’ve got to see just how gorgeous this maple top truly is, with the grain running at a 90-degree angle to the tight flames!
Of course, the color would be totally irrelevant if it were on an inferior guitar, but who doesn’t appreciate what Paul Reed Smith accomplished in the mid-1980s when he almost single-handedly revived the concept of the quality-crafted electric guitar? Which was great for us guitar players. With the ultra-stable PRS Tremolo, those trademark abalone birds, uncovered PRS humbuckers with coil-tapping (an HFS at the bridge and a Vintage Bass in the neck position) and superb playability thanks to its fast, wide-thin neck profile, this Custom 24 is a guitar anyone could easily fall in love with! While PRS has added quite a few new models to its lineup since the mid-1980s, like the Singlecut and Hollowbody, Paul Reed Smith himself states that the company still sells more Custom 24s than any other model. This one comes with the 5-position rotary pickup selector switch, which delivers both classic humbucker sounds and the glossy “in-between” tones most often heard on 3-pickup single-coil models. It comes in a deluxe, plush-lined harshell case and includes free FedEx shipping right to your door!
