Grammy-winning engineer/producer Mike Shipley died on July 26. Shipley was born in Australia and moved to England in his teens. He began his career as an assistant at Wessex Studios, where his first session was with the Sex Pistols. His career shifted into high gear when he began working with producer Mutt Lange on mega hit albums by such artists as Def Leppard, Shania Twain, The Corrs, and Maroon 5. He also worked on many, many other hits with artists such as Thomas Dolby, Winger, Prefab Sprout, Aerosmith, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and Joni Mitchell, and on soundtracks for Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, and many more.
Shipley came to Los Angeles for sessions with the Cars in 1984 and remained in L.A. for the rest of his life. He was an 8-time Grammy nominee with three wins including two for Alison Krauss & Union Station’s Paper Airplane.
