Focusrite REDNET Buying Guide

REDNET

The Simplicity of Ethernet. The Sound of Focusrite.

Introducing RedNet, Focusrite’s amazing new Ethernet-based audio interface/networking system. Built on the powerful Dante protocol, RedNet is ideal in any environment where pristine audio and extremely low latency over a network are required. Scalable and versatile, RedNet harnesses the simplicity of Ethernet to build audio networks systems that range from a small facility with one or two recording spaces, to moderate-sized facilities, to large studios with multiple recording spaces and control rooms. RedNet is also great for live performance venues such as concert halls, houses of worship, or large spaces like arenas and stadiums.

Performance

Focusrite Quality
Audio

RedNet forms a scalable audio distribution system that combines premium, versatile interfaces with the highest quality in sound and performance. RedNet features Focusrite’s industry-leading 24-bit A-D/D-A conversion technology and provides 24-bit operation at up to 192kHz sampling rate — all with virtually zero-latency.

Connectivity

As simple as plugging in an Ethernet cable

RedNet leverages the simplicity and ubiquity of Ethernet to create two-way, high-speed, latency-free audio networks anywhere. In buildings with Ethernet already installed, every room becomes a possible recording space; every space a possible control room. RedNet is also highly expandable, with onboard Dante protocol allowing a single network link to handle up to 512 channels (I/O) at 48kHz.

Control

Incredibly flexible, incredibly easy

Ideal for larger studios or facilities, RedNet’s Control software for routing, controlling, and configuring interfaces, numerous functions of a RedNet system can be set including: Preamps gain, Reference level, Clock source, Preferred master clock, Sample rate, and much more. Run it on your main control room computer or your laptop to move around the facility. Anywhere there is an Ethernet connection, you can be in control of the network.

RedNet 6

64 Channels of MADI I/O

The RedNet 6 MADI Bridge brings together your RedNet-based audio system and a MADI / AES10 system. Used for larger digital audio systems with consoles and conversion systems, MADI allows numerous channels to be carried along a single interface. With support for up to 64 channels of coaxial and optical MADI interfaces that are completely bi-directional, RedNet 6 also features an asynchronous sample rate converter (ASRC) on every input and output. So you can interface between MADI and RedNet irrespective of the sample rate at which either system is operating. Connect your RedNet system to MADI-based digital consoles, computer cards, converters, and much more with RedNet 6.

RedNet provides three ways to connect your system: Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS), a Focusrite RedNet PCIe card, or a RedNet 5 unit. Choose between these three depending on your recording platform and system requirements:

  • Simple RedNet systems can easily be managed with the Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) software, which can be used to host the network from your computer’s built-in Ethernet port. A virtual driver can also be used in a portable laptop-based system.
  • If you are a Core Audio or ASIO user (Logic or Nuendo), choose the RedNet PCIe card. Working with Mac and Windows machines and a standard PCIe card slot, this method delivers 128 channels I/O at 96kHz sampling, with three milliseconds latency.
  • If you are a Pro Tools HD user, choose RedNet 5. This “bridge” between Pro Tools HD and the RedNet network delivers the same level of latency and number of I/Os you expect from your ProTools HD system, combined with the ease and speed of Ethernet.

Features:

  • Add MADI to RedNet — or RedNet to MADI
  • Supports both optical and coaxial interfaces; connects to any MADI equipment
  • Slave either the RedNet systems or MADI streams to an external word clock
  • Supports up to 64 channels of digital audio I/O at standard sample rates
  • Each RedNet 6 input and output has asynchronous sample rate converters (ASRC), allowing MADI and RedNet systems to operate simultaneously at different sample rates

Sample Configurations

Recording Studio with PCIe Host

For a two-room studio, control room monitoring and line inputs are provided via RedNet 2. In the live room, three RedNet 4 units provide 24 channels of remote control mic pres, and RedNet 1 provides line level monitoring sends and eight line inputs.

Pro Tools HD with RedNet

For a Pro Tools HD setup, RedNet 5 allows seamless integration with the Dante network. An Avid OMNI is connected to one of two RedNet 5 units via Loop Sync while the second RedNet 5 receives a clocking signal over the network, providing up to 64 channels I/O to and from the Pro Tools HD system and RedNet. This set up allows for more channels simply by adding additional RedNet 4 units. The RedNet 2 provides 16 channels of line level I/O, and RedNet 3 allows the connection of up to 32 channels I/O of ADAT signals, even at 96 kHz.

Location Recording

Dante Virtual Soundcard provides a great solution for the mobile recording engineer. Simply plug into your onboard Ethernet port with a CAT 6 cable, and connect to RedNet interfaces via a switch. And since RedNet uses standard Ethernet hardware, a CAT 6 cable can run up to 109 yards in length, perfect for location recording. In this setup, two RedNet 4s provide 16 channels of remote-controlled mic pres for use near the stage, while a single RedNet 1 provides the line I/O for monitoring.

Auditoriums and Live Applications

RedNet is also scalable for use in larger facilities. The backbone of the network system is based on fiber optics. Each switch in the system provides breakout/in on Ethernet ports to which CAT 6 cabling is connected. In this setup, front-of-house sound for the auditorium is mixed using a Dante-enabled mixing console and a local computer equipped with RedNet PCIe for recording. RedNet 4 and RedNet 2 units are used to create a stage box, sending audio to and from the main stage. RedNet 6 is also used to provide MADI I/O which could be used to feed a broadcast stream.
