How to find any imported Audio Files’ exact tempo in Logic Audio no matter what! Getting perfect loops is a skill that takes some time to develop, and there are many software tools to help make it easy. But once that loop is in a sequencer it is usually important to know its EXACT tempo so you can properly build around it without things drifting out of sync.
Once you have that perfect 2 or 4 bar loop, drag it into the Arrange Window and position it at bar ‘one’ on any audio track.
Figure out how many bars long the loop is. It is nice to have a basic understanding of time signatures to properly do this, but for most music it’s pretty easy. Let’s say the loop is 4 bars long.
Highlight/Draw a 4 bar Cycle in the Arrange Window’s Bar Ruler.
You now have a 4 bar audio region starting at bar one and the Cycle (locators) set from bar one to the end of bar 4 (4 bar cycle). Here is where you usually notice the region does not fit exactly in the 4 bars. This is because the tempo of the sequencer does not match that of the audio loop.
Select the 4 bar Audio Region, then select “Adjust Tempo Using Objects Length and Locators” from the Functions Menu in the Arrange window (In version 4.0 this will be under the Option’s Menu Tempo section) and presto you get the perfect tempo down to an accuracy of .0000 percent. It’s really cool. You see, you know the region is 4 bars long and all you have told Logic Audio to do is calculate a perfect tempo that makes it fit perfectly in the 4 bar cycle (the locators).
You can do this multiple times with regions placed at different positions on the bar ruler with different loops at different tempos. Each time you do this, use the same procedure as above. If the Loop starts at bar 16 and is 2 bars long, draw a cycle point on Bars 16 and 17, select the region, perform the “Adjust Tempo Using Objects Length and Locators” and Logic Audio Will prompt you “Do you want to set the Tempo Globally or Create a Tempo Change? Select your wish.
Once you have a region set to the exact tempo. Loop it, copy it and try right corner drags on each region in the Arrange Widow. With each region independently looping you can create some mighty cool syncopations. It’s a blast. When you get a handle on this technique, it becomes a breeze to take two loops of different tempos and get then to match at the same tempo.
