Mic's vs pre-amps

Would you generally consider it preferable to have a set up with a quality mic and top line pre-amp or a quality pre-amp and top line mic

1. Good Talent
2. Good mic
3. Good preamp
The signal must make it to the recording before you can do anything with it. At one time we had to chose between a pre amp that had bad distortion and one that had nice distortion. Now we can have a pre amp that just makes it louder, and it is not hard to do.

What ^^ he ^^ said. too may people get hung up on pre-amps. no one can tell you what preamp is in your mix- but a good mike, room treatment, and obviously a great signal will make a major difference. There are such things as awful pre- amp, but seriously in today's world, there's lot s of great options at great prices.
