GB - Hum suddenly appears on real instrument tracks

Hi, I'm messing around with a home recording setup (Garage Band on an iMac, MIDI controller keyboard and a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro)and while it was working fine the other day, now there's a distinct hum on the real instrument tracks.
I've got an acoustic guitar pickup and a voice mic plugged into the mixer, and the mixer appears to be the source of the hum. I don't *think* I've messed with the settings, but what with testing for the source of the hum some things got changed.
When I plug either mic or guitar directly into the Mac, hum goes away, but I'd like to learn the mixer while doing these test recordings.
What should I be looking for in getting rid of the hum?
