Many people have been quite disappointed by the very common problem with USB microphones lacking any way to live monitor the input. This makes them very difficult, or impossible, to use for anything that requires quality control. A very few USB microphones have a direct monitor connection. This might be handled with a recording application that has an input monitoring facility. Not all recording application, by a long shot, provide for this. There could be enough latency between USB input and sound output to make working difficult. Most USB microphone preamps have a direct monitor connections and can handle a wide selection of "regular" (non-USB) microphones.
