Help with effect "Gain Staging"

Pauly 6 String

I'm looking for advice on how to properly "gain stage" my external effects. Using an MX-200 with
the effects going back into a input channel. Had an 2442FX but am now going to use a Carvin C1240.
With the channel Aux effect send, master effect send, outboard processor input and mix, and the return (currently using an input channel) I'm a little lost in how to get my effects set up sounding their best.
Thanks for your help

Generally this is how it works:

Hopefully your effects have some decent level meters, or it becomes a bit more difficult to do this properly. If all you have is some peak indication, worst case you could bring up the input levels on each piece until the clip indicator blinks with the highest peaks, then back the level down a bit.
