how to set up a proper soundstage?

jaysun

Is there a standard rule that applies to the placement of the different instruments/vocals in a recording.
Obviously you wouldn't want the vocals to appear like they are coming from the rear or uncentered (maybe in certain segments of a song). But what about the other instruments (Bass, guitar, and drums).
Thanks,
Jason

As with most things in this biz, there are no real rules. Creativity is the only rule.

I try to fit the into the sound stage similar to how the band performs live. With the exception that the Bass guitar is centered. Lead guitar will be center, two rhythm's will be panned 20%L and 20%R.
When I do gospe quartets, I'll place the lead vocal and bass vocal in the center with the other two vocals 20% L/R. This widens the sound field a bit. I run all vocals through the same verb.
