After the Sound Card-Mixer or Breakout Box?

Ryobi7

I just bought and successfully installed an echo mia in my computer. Next, I am trying to decide what would be the most advantageous to get. A small compact mixer which seems quite common these days in the home recording world or a small breakout box to plug into. I don't have studio monitors yet but I would like to use my PC speakers for the time being and obviously when recording use a pair of headphones. However, I don't want to have to bother with plugging in and out of the card in the back of the tower. What piece of hardware would allow me this type of flexibility? Basically plug in my instruments for recording and my speakers for monitoring.
Thanks
