Acoustic Guitar Recommendation for a Newbie?

erikhaan

Hello, everyone!
One of my New Year's resolutions is to learn to play an acoustic guitar. I have never before played an instrument and I'm hoping to use GarageBand, a software in my Mac, to learn.
I have no idea what kind of acoustic guitar to purchase.
Can someone please help me get started in the right direction?
Thanks!
Erik

Takamine makes some of the best entry-level acoustic guitars I've played. I went to a shop with one of my students and the around-$300 Takamine Dreadnought was the standout best in its class. It had no electronics and this is the closest to it I could find on the Sweetwater site: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TR340S/
If you are able to spend a little more, the Martin DX series has exceptional playability: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DX1RAE/
The three things you want to look for in a starter guitar:
1. Tone - does it sound good to you? does it sound inspiring to you to want you to keep playing?
2. Playability - is it (relatively) easy to press the strings down? will it encourage you or discourage you when you sit down to play?
3. Intonation - how well does it keep in tune? does it sound like it's a guitar or a honky-tonk piano when you play chords?
and a fourth that isn't that important but worth mentioning:
4. Resale - if you decide guitar isn't the thing for you, does the manufacturer have a solid enough reputation that you could sell it at not-too-bad of a loss?

I just purchased this and look forward to learning how to play. Great suggestion, Richard!

Hard to go wrong with Seagull guitars, as well. My wife and I have one that still plays perfectly after I think 14 years. Beautiful, rich sound. Projects better than any acoustic I've played. And not terribly expensive, either. I wouldn't buy anything else without at least taking a Seagull for a test spin.
