Multitrack recorder and mixer

I have done a lot of recording with others but not on my own. I was planning on recording through my computer and have decided to buy a multitrack recorder.
My question is if I can use a recorder with a mixer? Do any of you have experience with this? I bought a Behringer mixer with 4 XLR ports. If I can use this with a recorder I would like one with another 4 XLR's.
If I cannot I was considering getting rid of the mixer and buying a recorder with 8 XLR's.
The reason why is because I have a 7 piece drum mic set.

Why not skip the mixer and get something like the Zoom R16?

That's the one I have been considering. Is it still possible to use a recorder/mixer?

Yes, but why would you want to?

The reason why is because I just bought the mixer. Never been used.
