Hollow Stage Acoustic Solution

I am currently working on renovating a 1000 seat auditorium with the intention of having excellent acoustics. The venue has a stage that is about 1600 square feet in surface area (about 80x20), has a rise of about 30 inches, and is framed with aluminum studding. As you can guess, this makes for an incredibly boomy environment.
Aside of pumping the stage full of several truckloads of sand, what say you about taking care of this problem? Thanks!
