Sustain pedal workaround

Hi everyone
I've got a roland digital piano HP 7e and the sustain pedal doesn't work. I've taken the pedal apart and I am getting voltage changes when I press the pedal so I assume the fault is in the keyboard or the lead. To get it repaired would be expensive and impractical but I think I have a solution.
If I buy a cheap controller keyboard with a sustain pedal and plug it into the MIDI In port on my roland will I be able to use the sustain pedal on the controller keyboard and play my roland as per normal?? I suspect this will be cheaper than sending the roland off for repairs and I will get another controller keyboard to add to my rig which could be handy.
Ideally a midi controlled foot pedal would be a great solution but I can't find any.
Thanks for any thoughts/comments/insults in advance
