Help Choosing Mic for Acoustic Guitar

maxcohen

I'm looking to two-mic record an acoustic guitar. I've found a local company who will hire out microphones but I'm out of my depth when it comes to choosing from their list... If anyone with the knowledge can have a look at the hire list below and let me have some thoughts on choice and application it would be greatly appreciated...

Here is a mic choice and application link, http://www.sweetwater.com/shop/studio/studio-microphones/buying-guide.php.
Out of the list you provide I would choose the AT 4041, however, I use a single Shure SM-81 for acoustic guitar and love it. I've never tried to record in stereo because my room doesn't sound great. Good luck.

Most of the mics on this list will do a decent to excellent job, depending on....well, depending on a lot of things. What is the application, what is the room/space like, what is the preamp and/or recorder, what sound are you going for, etc?
If you don't want to be that detailed in your selection then just tell the rental company you'll take whatever mid priced small diaphragm condenser they have. It will do the job. Be sure you have a way to supply phantom power to it though. Most preamps and mixers have this capability, but it's not always a given.
Good luck.

Cant go wrong with the AT 4041, At 4033, Shure SM81- I am sure others are great- I own these and do a LOT of Acoustic miking and they are wonderful.

I would support the use of the SM81 as a choice, except it's not on the list.
Of the Shure mics listed, none would be my first choice for acoustic.
I would probably go with the AKG 451.
Of Shure mics not on your list I have used the KSM-141 and the KSM-44, as well as the SM-81 for acoustic.

AT 4041 or 4033, AKG 451, maybe the 414, although I've had better results with the others already mentioned for acoustic guitar. Actually, I'd be quite content with any or all of the first 3.
