Obviously it's impossible to objectively name a "best" band, and so I'll try to answer subjectively with some of my favorites. Keep in mind that I like all sorts of music, from all genres, some more than others. Musicianship, song craft, meaningful lyrics, catchy melodies, my mood at the time - they all play a part in determining what I want to listen to. So - some favorites, in no particular order:
- TooL (If I had to name a favorite, this would probably be it. Their music transcends genres and defies classification. No one else does what they do.)
- Everything But The Girl (Haunting vocals, introspective lyrics, constantly evolving)
- Journey (Steve Perry years - anyone who says they didn't like those first three albums is lyin'. Neal Schon is still my pick for most underrated guitarist)
- Pink Floyd/David Gilmour (The Master at work)
- AC/DC (Quintessential Rock 'n' Roll. Period.)
- Led Zeppelin (Only musicians appreciate their real value. British alchemists turned blues into rock)
- Elton John through the mid 70's (incl. Bernie Taupin, Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson. Genius; pure genius)
- Uncle Tupelo (If you don't understand this pick, you never will)
- Linkin Park (These kids rock)
- Neil Young (Anywhere, any time)
...to be continued...
