It's been a while since I signed up, but, if memory serves, there was no captcha. I think implementing one would probably lessen the spammers that show up on this board. Just my $.02.

We've had that in place for close to a year now.

And it's helped, too. There are some creative ones that get by it, but the overall volume of spam is WAY down compared with a year ago.

No sooner does this thread appear than we get the ballsiest porn posting I've ever seen on this forum. Wow.
May 14, 2008 @07:28am

Wow, that's a terrible one! Dangerous even as it actually shows pictures. Maybe a person should not be able to post pics unless they have 5 posts or more?
May 14, 2008 @08:01am

Yeah, that stuff is pretty scary. It's to the point now where (since I check this a lot at work), I won't open it if I don't know the poster. Sad. :(

We just implemented something slightly different that should help (I don't really want to discuss what it is for obvious reasons). Hopefully we have a handle on it now...but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they get more sophisticated and get through again. It really is like a game of cat and mouse.

It really is. But I think you guys really have done a great job about keeping spammers off this board.

I just saw this on the Trading Post:
It's another of the usual Chinese manufacturer spam (the volume of which is way down, by the way). But my eye went right to the phrase "retarded materials." Seems somewhat appropriate.
I wonder if these people think that spamming the internet with completely unrelated products is somehow going to drum up business. I mean, has anyone here been to NAMM and seen the booth after booth of Chinese knock-offs, all of them with no prospective clients even looking at the stuff?
I'm sure I'm going to offend someone. I apologize in advance.

what a mess....
May 23, 2008 @04:09am

Looks like we are going to need something else to ward off the spammers
July 4, 2008 @04:28pm

Ain't that the truth.
July 4, 2008 @05:01pm

They REALLY love the Outboard Gear section, don't they?
July 4, 2008 @07:45pm

Perhaps if it were set up so that all accounts had a first post much like the Chit Chat section? For the very first post (be it a response or a new thread) of an account, it has to be reviewed as legitimate before any further posts can be made? Or after the first post, the account is restricted from posting for 24 hours to allow the rest of the community to respond/review and if it gets flagged as spam, the IP is blocked?
This is getting pretty retarded. I mean, are people seriously making money off of spamming boards like this? Jeez. SW has done a great job so far with keeping spam off. Maybe implementing something like that might help?

We're looking into what to do next. There is some new (to us) software that can search for keywords and remove posts. They were trying to get a beta version of it going before the weekend, but I'm not sure if that happened. We'll get it back under control. Thanks for hanging in there.
