Shure SM58 vs. shure SM48

how much of a difference is there?
January 18, 2007 @08:12pm

HI there.
There is not much of a difference between these two microphones.
first off, the frequency response is very similar
but the 48 seems to be more sensitive to frequencies in the upper bandwidth and does not sport a response pattern quite as flat as the 58 but these differences are negligible and i doubt you could tell the difference.
you can compare them:

However, there is a switch located on the SM48
and the 58 is built better and can stand up to a more demanding enviroment.
The SM48 is more like the PG58 then the SM58.
i hope this helps

I don't know whether this is still true, or to what extent, but years ago there were a number of cheaper Shure mics that used basically the same capsule as the SM-58. The capsules that didn't pass certain tests (but worked) prior to assembly were shunted off to be used in these lower priced mics.
