When it all comes down to it, I've heard amazing records done with SM57's and Mackies, and piss-poor records done with fancy mics, pres, and AD conversion. Which leads me to believe that great records have way less to do with expensive gear, and way more to do with great musicianship, creativity, and production talent. Unfortunately, these latter things can't be bought via mail-order.Something to keep in mind.
