With a good headset microphone secured to either your ear or around your head, you'll enjoy more freedom to perform and engage with your audience. Sweetwater understands that headset designs are a very particular area for performers. That’s why we provide a wide selection for you to choose from so you can be completely comfortable on stage.
The headset microphone is often considered a staple for those looking to move freely during a performance, and subsequently there has been continued development for a range of different looks. The traditional option will encompass your entire head with a topover design reflecting a standard headset. More modern designs include the over-ear microphone which leaves no material on the top. It is often hidden by skin tone and its small size when viewed from a distance. The around-the-head design is a favorite for those that need to be hands-free, but are not necessarily moving much. Over-ear options have proven to be reliable for more active movement.
The two primary polar patterns you’ll find in headset microphones are omnidirectional and cardioid. Omni patterned microphones will pick up sound from all directions equally, making them the preferred option when you want to pick up more of your surroundings. The wider recording area also provides a benefit if you want freer mic positioning. On the other hand, cardioid headset mics reject off-axis sounds and keep excess noise to a minimum.
An often overlooked characteristic of your microphone is the cable length. The majority of headset mics we carry at Sweetwater feature cable lengths of three feet or longer. Depending on your needs, there are options at less than offer both more and less freedom. Excess wire can be helpful in terms of positioning and set-up, but it will also be more noticeable when on person. It’s up to your personal preferences whether ease of use or aesthetics matters more.
