27 Amps. 5 Mics. 145 Profiles from Carl's Personal Collection.

What happens when you drop genre-bending session icon Carl Verheyen (Supertramp) and a storehouse of his favorite amps into LA's Sunset Sound studios with producer extraordinaire Mark Hornsby at the helm? You get the Carl Verheyen Vintage Amp Collection Kemper profile pack: the final word on authoritative vintage tube tones for the Kemper platform. From country to blues, rock to pop, this collection of 145 profiles highlights 27 indispensable amps from Carl's personal arsenal. Carl's amps and cabs have been meticulously captured into Studio II's Neve 80 Series console — famed for its work on Toto's IV and Van Halen's II — using the finest analog recording gear on the planet. And let us tell you: whether you're front-ending a stage cab, direct-injecting a PA, or feeding tones into your production workstation, this pack continues to come out on top in every ring we've thrown it in. Carl and Mark have staked great pains to preserve the character of these vintage amps in the digital domain. If you're a Kemper user who's searching for a single pack to rule them all, the Carl Verheyen Vintage Amp Collection has the range and power to cover just about any style of music you're likely to come across.

27 vintage amps from Carl's personal collection...

Carl has to be one of the most prolific amp collectors in the business. For the Vintage Amp Collection Kemper profile pack, Carl has immortalized 27 of his all-time-favorite classics for the Kemper platform. From the squeakiest-clean handwired American pedal platforms to the most formidably modded British rock monsters, this pack has you covered for endless musical styles. Inside, you'll find 145 versatile profiles ranging from compressed country cleans to high-octane hard-rock horsepower — all just waiting to be dropped into your Kemper.

Captured at Hollywood's Sunset Sound studios...

Can you still hear the sound of Toto's IV or Van Halen's II imprinted on your impressionable young mind? That's the sound of Sunset Sound's renowned Studio II. And it's in this very room that the Carl Verheyen Vintage Amp Collection was brought to life. This 50-year institution of the LA music scene has been the backdrop to rock and pop's most iconic records of the past half-century — a roster that includes Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow, Aretha Franklin, Neil Young, Weezer, Poison, and countless others.

By producer Mark Hornsby into a legendary Neve console

When it comes to putting amp tones under the microscope of modern production, award-winning producer/engineer Mark Hornsby (Anthrax, Alison Krauss, New Found Glory, Eric Johnson) is among the top in the industry. Mark has brought his talents to bear on Carl's Vintage Amp Collection using some of the best-of-the-best recording gear on the planet. We're talking a fully loaded Neve 8088 console straight from Sunset Sound's legendary Studio II, fed by five distinct mics into walls of juicy mojo-packed analog outboard gear. It's all guided by Mark's skilled hand and all the processing know-how needed to make these profiles mix ready for modern production work.

Look at this Amp List!

Each of Carl's amps has been profiled using five distinct studio-standard microphones: a Shure SM57, a Telefunken M80, a Royer R-121 ribbon, an old-school AKG C414 XLS condenser, and a vintage Neumann U-67 tube LDC. The result is 145 stunning profiles. By re-amping tracks through multiple mic profiles of the same model, you can achieve phase-correct mic blends you'd never be able to get in the studio. Here's a breakdown of each amp:

  • '59 Fender Bassman: A special handwired reissue 4 x 10-inch. Highly interactive speaker/tube/cab breakup yields gritty power chords to straight-up solo saturation.
  • '63 Fender Tremolux: Vintage Blackface-era tone. Sounds great with pedals in front of it.
  • '64 Fender Twin Reverb: The American industry standard. Crystal-clear highs and a full-bodied low end. Really shines for rhythm work. Used onstage next to the great Albert Lee.
  • '65 Fender Deluxe Reverb: Carl's main practice amp. A little underpowered for full bands, but takes on new life in the Kemper realm.
  • '65 Princeton Reverb: "Ground zero" for electric guitar tone. Used on Disney-Pixar's Cars.
  • '66 Marshall JTM45: Unique among all Plexis. "There's nothing better for playing the blues," says Carl.
  • '66 Fender Showman: A particularly vibey 4 x 6L6 head. It was profiled with the volume set around six, where it "really comes alive," according to Carl.
  • '67 Princeton Reverb: An upgraded Mercury Magnetics transformer gives this longtime favorite of Carl's a beefier tone. Can be heard in 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton.
  • '68 Marshall JMP 50-watt: "The Holy Grail of distortion amps," gushes Carl. A major contributor to Carl's Essential Blues album, recorded right here at Sweetwater Studios. "A sweet semi-crunch...that saturates nicely at higher levels," adds Carl.
  • '69 Marshall Super Lead 100-watt: Very likely the same make, model, and year of amp used by Van Halen and Hendrix. One of Carl's "most valuable amps," it was called "the best hundred-watt Marshall I've ever heard" by guitar icon Joe Bonamassa.
  • '63 Vox AC30 (Clean/Dirty): Does Beatles chime to Brian May snarl. "The best one I own," says Carl.
  • Bergatone Twin Tone 20: Fat and bluesy German boutique amp — "basically a modded Princeton Reverb on steroids."
  • Danelectro Nifty 50: A tiny tone that can be just the ticket for select applications. Used to score Suddenly Susan.
  • Dr. Z Carmen Ghia: Minimal controls for a super-pure tone. Run into a 2 x 10-inch open-back cab.
  • Dr. Z Z-Luxe: Michael Zaite's one-input deluxe, with the master volume cranked for maximum fatness.
  • Dr. Z SRZ-65: Carl's main distortion machine for live use. Takes pedals well.
  • Egnater Studio Preamp: Four-channel preamp built by Bruce Egnater himself. Used on The Crow and The Usual Suspects.
  • Gibson Falcon: Called "pure honey" by a producer on a Gordon Goodwin record that Carl played on.
  • Friedman (Clean/Dirty): Yields crystal cleans to ferocious distortion. Loaded with a pair of Celestion Creamback ceramic 12-inch speakers.
  • Hampstead Artist 20+RT: A rare 20-watt head built by Peter Hampstead. Heard on Carl's contributions to Arrested Development.
  • '75 Hiwatt 100-watt: Loud and high headroom, but gets a Townsend-like sound when you crank it.
  • Mesa/Boogie Studio Preamp: A staple of Carl's home studio. Can be heard on Carl's work for Seinfeld and Married...with Children.
  • Shinos Luck 6V: Used by Carl on the 81st Annual Academy Awards, heard by some 43 million viewers. Great cleans. Loves pedals.
  • THD Flexi-50: Unique breakup. Nails the "semi-crunch" tone. Used on films from Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol to Star Trek.
  • THD Plexi-Mod: Based on a 50-watt Marshall but has much in common with a 4 x 10-inch Bassman. Heard on The Bee Gees' Still Waters album and during Supertramp world tours, circa 1997–2002.
  • Trainwreck Climax: Adds a unique character to lead tones; great for Strat solos.
  • Vox AC-4 modded: Features upgraded input/output transformers and a 10-inch Celestion Gold speaker.

Cherry on a Kemper Sundae!

I will get right to what everyone is thinking, "How much !" If you just bought a Kemper or have had it for sometime you will find these profiles worth every penny. There are plenty of people selling download of some famous band / guitar player that tries and captures their sound, using whatever amps and effects, but this is more than that. You not only get the sound of some of the most sought after amps on the marker, but you get 5 different versions of that amp using 5 different mics, the differences is amazing. You can find thousands of downloads on the Kemper Rig Exchange by searching for the amp name, model or the author of the profile. If you want the EVH sound, you want the amp Ed used, not some other brand that come close. Want a 1966 Marshall ? Dr Z ? Friedman ? or some other great amps? They are here. You spent a lot for your Kemper, dont settle for some free downloads of profiles that makes your Kemper sound like $25 amp.
Music background: 4 decades of practicing.

Awesome rigs

Turn up the gain a little on the Marshall JMP 50 watt and it's amazing. All the fenders sound great! Worth every penny.

Worth it!

This pack covers a lot of sonic territory. Many of the amps were recorded with up to five different mics. How much of a difference can one mic make? Oh wow! You'll pick something like the heavy Egnater with a Royer121 mic and then realize, maybe it would be better to use the subdued trebles and lower grumble of the Egnater through the Shure SM57. While the assortment of mics gives you more tonal appreciation and customization options, it would have been nice if they had also include a combo of mics used for a single profile (as some others have done creating some impressive rigs).

Q: Will this be your do everything toolkit?
A: No...does something like that really exist? For some super heavy tones and other niche sounds you will probably keep searching the Rig Exchange, buy other profile packages, or create your own sounds to round out your arsenal, but this is a good foundation.

Q: How many sounds were recorded using a single coil vs. a humbucker?
A: Approximately, 2/3 or roughly 90 - 100 were recorded using a single coil and the remaining 50-ish with a humbucker. Obviously, you can play whatever you want through it, but this might help some of you (like myself) get an idea on the tones it carries.

Q: Was the purchase worth it?
A: YES! When you consider how much time and money you'd spend creating inferior reproductions of this set on your own, it's definitely worth it...THANK YOU guys for putting this collection together!

Bottom Line: Great tool for those playing a large variety of musical styles requiring anything from clean, to light breaking crunch, to classic rock, through heavier lead and rhythm sounds!

I can attest, these rigs bring the CV tones!!!

I am blessed to say that I had the opportunity to play through a number of these actual amp rigs of Carl's while he was producing my band's CD at sunset sound in 2005. There isn't an amp in his collection that doesn't sound simply phenomenal.

Likewise, being a huge fan of Carl's work and being so familiar with the guitar tones on his recordings, even when my goofy fingers noodled on guitar riffs through these profiles, you could recognize the Verheyen signature sounds in the profiles as if they were right off the recordings.

If you're looking for stellar guitar tones, and even more-so a great variety of them, this is the pack for you!
