Need some noise management for a leaky floor tom? Noisy guitar cab? Sweetwater’s expanders and noise gates can clean up your signal without introducing unwanted artifacts. Our Sales Engineers are passionate about the expansion units we carry, and are happy to point you in the right direction.
We all know what it’s like to capture a great take, only to discover later on that it’s full of noise: drums leaking out of your singer’s headphones into the microphone or hiss from a noisy preamp creeping its way into your signal. Without treatment, these ailments can render a recording unusable. Fortunately, there is an efficient way to deal with noise in recordings: gates and expanders.
Gates and expanders expand your dynamic range, effectively reducing the volume of ambient noise or killing it altogether. Noise gates are incredibly effective when used as your first dynamics processor.
Sweetwater offers a variety of expanders and gates, and each has varying features. Most gates have basic controls: threshold, attack, hold and release. In addition to these, a gate can also be equipped with a sidechain. A sidechain allows you to create some interesting effects you couldn’t get otherwise.
Do you want to filter out some sounds? Check out our gates that include highpass and/or lowpass filters. These filters are great for helping you clearly shape your sound. We also offer noise gates with independent internal frequency filters.
Do you record drums? A peak punch feature, such as found on the Drawmer MXPRO-40, will restore attack to gated percussion sounds. If you want, you can also use this feature for clearing up murky snare and kick sounds on your track.
How many channels do you need for your gate? We offer both 2-channel and 4-channel devices, so before buying, think about how much of your gear you plan on hooking up. We also carry gates with XLR and ¼ inputs.
Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, Sweetwater has for all your gating and expansion needs. If you have trouble choosing a great gate or expander, our Sales Engineers will quickly and professionally find the solution that meets your needs and budget, whether you’re a professional or you’re just starting out.
