About Looper Pedals

When it comes to laying out new song ideas, practicing your timing, or creating cool layered effects onstage, a great looper can be one of the best things you add to your rig. It doesn't even matter what you play — guitar, bass, keys, you name it — a looper can be a great tool and a lot of fun to play with.

How does a looper pedal work?

On a fundamental level, all loopers do the same thing: they record a part you play and then play it back in a continuous loop until you tell it to stop. Most loopers include a few additional basic controls and options. For starters, sound-on-sound recording, which lets you layer additional passes, is fairly standard. Almost as common is the ability to undo your last pass, allowing you to make mistakes or try out new ideas, without compromising your previous passes. Redo is slightly less common, but it can be an extremely cool performance tool, since it lets you bring layers in an out of the mix.

Advanced loopers offer a number of additional features we're sure you'll enjoy. For starters, they often include multiple footswitches, which make functions such as undo and redo a lot easier to access on the fly. They might also include XLR, line-level, and stereo inputs to better accommodate a wider range of instruments and sources. Onboard metronomes and rhythm tracks can help keep you on the beat, and they're especially useful if you use your looper to practice your timing.

Advanced looper functions: sync, tap, and onboard storage

MIDI and sync options make it easy to lock your looper to other clock sources, ensuring that your looper stays in time with the beat. A simpler option is tap tempo, which is available on many advanced loopers. Top it off with additional effects, reverse looping, and other bonuses, and there's no end to what you can do with a looper pedal.

The next major bonus you'll find on high-end loopers is removable media or USB connections with onboard storage. Either can provide you with both the ability to upload your recordings to your computer or download loops from your computer to your pedal. Looper pedals all offer at least CD-quality 16-bit/44.1kHz recording, though many go far beyond that. This can be invaluable for getting down song ideas quickly. On the other hand, being able to load up your own rhythms and backing tracks can be incredibly handy, either as a practice tool or as part of your live performances.
