Your sound is your identity as a guitarist. In large part, this sound depends on having the right (usually nylon) classical guitar strings.

Guitar strings are grouped on tension values: light, medium or high-tension. The tension refers to the rigidity the strings have when they produce the standard notes of each string. How do you choose the best classical guitar strings for your instrument? Obviously, there are many variables that need to be considered. Some guitars are built in such a way that the strings are more distant from the guitar neck than others, which influences the stiffness of the strings.

Here's some basic info: higher tension classical guitar strings are a little bit louder and have a tighter vibration. Medium and light tension strings will vibrate a bit more loosely when they're being played.

Are you a beginner? Start with light classical guitar strings. New guitarists tire more quickly, by virtue of not having enough practice under their belts. Lighter strings can be your secret weapon, allowing you to play and practice for longer than high-tension classical guitar strings would allow.

Another thing you want to consider when you're choosing classical guitar strings is the tone. Higher tension strings have a brighter sound, thanks to the strength of the high frequencies. With lighter tension strings, midranges speak a little bit more, while the medium tension ones are somewhere in between.

Look for a set of classical guitar strings that can perform in the practice studio, on the stage or wherever you need to play your guitar. You want your strings to offer great tone, clarity, and response.
