Roland R-07 - nice when it works as advertised - but very inconsistent

First off - I use this recorder for practice purposes on a Roland drum kit and for recording band practices. I use a drum-less input track into drum kit, use splitter on kit headphone and one cable to headset and one cable to Roland R-7 mic to record my drumming with drum-less track and I use the on board mics for band practice. Sound is good, rehearsal mode is a great idea and it works...bluetooth capacity is great too. Problem is that at least several times per session, the R-07 goes to a screen that is incomprehensible, and not in the manual. No instructions as to what to do. The screen shows a bar across and instructs me to link device here.....there are several greyed out options along the bottom of the screen...I usually have to stop everything, disconnect from network, cut bluetooth, reconnect and hope that I get the appropriate recording screen and not this one. Wastes a lot of time...If you are paying for practice space, you just wasted any $$$ you thought you saved with this... recorder in one or two sessions over the purchase of a time tested competitor.

Basically, it would be great if it worked without bugs, because of bluetooth control you can stop and start recordings without getting off your seat...and great sound, but it doesn't work consistently and that becomes a real problem, real fast. Becomes a real time sink. Very frustrating. Move on to a time tested product.

See pix attached - you can't get out of the screen and its not even in the manual.....just randomly gets stuck here lots of times

Roland R-07

I love the small size. It does exactly what I need it to do. If you are looking for a tiny recorder that sounds great, I recommend the R-07. I subtracted 1/2 star because the micro SD card is slightly difficult to access. I bought it for a very specific purpose and it paid for itself the first time out.

Just as good

Just as good as the Zoom h2n, Olympus ls-100, tascam dr-05, and the tascam dp-008 ex, because these are all the recorders I use to date. Mind you that After recording vocal speech I enhance the tone with WAVELAB LE7 which will give you radio broadcast sound. I use plugin mic Shure pg48 to record talk bible speech. All these recorders differ a bit in features so if you get the Roland r07 you will love it. Also take in mind that the onboard reverb on the r07 isn't very noticable via headphones.

Not too reliable

I really liked this recorder, the ease of use, the sound quality plus the fact that it fit on a camera tripod and I could control it using an app with my Android phone or I-pad was great. The main problem is that it malfunctioned after only 3 months of use. I purchased the extended warranty with it (I suggest for you to do the same) sent it in for repair and they said that it could not be fixed and returned my purchase amount to me. The other problem was the fact that it used up battery power rapidly. I did not get around to using all of the features of the unit, although the ones that I did use worked very nicely. I am not sure yet if I will buy another unit or try out the Tascam DR-40X.

Sounds Good but Otherwise Frustrating

First: The recordings sound very good. For the price, I'd give it a 4 or higher rating.

But that's about where the love stops. The firmware upgrade was a total pain to perform. I still can't get it to work with my new iPhone X. I didn't exactly buy it to work with my phone but c'mon man! This is late 2019! Software has to work and be efficient! This really isn't!

I mainly bought it to record ideas on the fly and to use with my camera during video shoots. For these two purposes I'd give it a solid 4 stars because it's a nice step up from what I'd been using.

I typically dig Roland gear. I have some legacy products that still work after 20 years. It was one of the factors in my decision to buy this over a Zoom or such.

However, the frustration of getting it to work as advertised was pretty high. For that reason I can't give it more than 3 stars... Maybe that's why it was on sale.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
