The Portable Hammond for the Organ-focused Keyboardist

At Sweetwater, the name Hammond commands respect. It’s synonymous with the classic tonewheel organs such as the B3 that played an outsized role in the music revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. In the digital era, Hammond assumed a leadership role in developing cutting-edge “clonewheel” organs that deliver those legendary organ sounds, along with all the other essential keyboard instruments you need for any gig or recording session. The SK Pro represents the latest generation of organ-focused, do-it-all keyboards from Hammond. Loaded with higher-resolution samples than previous SK series instruments and equipped with four robust sound engines that can be deployed individually or in any combination, the Hammond SK Pro ups the ante for breathtaking sonic realism.

Definitive Drawbar Organs

As a genuine Hammond, the SK Pro is, of course, going to have state-of-the-art authentic organ sounds. These come courtesy of its newly developed Drawbar Organ section, which is derived from Hammond’s flagship XK-5. The SK Pro’s industry-standard Hammond tone is produced by the powerful Modeled Tone Wheel 1 (MTW1) sound engine, complemented by a special system that emulates the Matching Transformer of a vintage Hammond; while a newly developed Virtual Multi-Contact function replicates the keyboard performance of those coveted models. This modern technology closely follows Mr. Hammond’s original design, but is executed without moving parts in the digital realm, providing all the unique sonic characteristics and imperfections that have come to define the classic Hammond sound. In the factory, the SK Pro is set to the same tolerances as a B-3 was during its production run, but digital control — including the Touch-Response Percussion found on vintage Hammonds — allows you to sculpt nearly every aspect of your sound.

Next-generation Digital Leslie

The SK Pro houses Hammond’s next-generation onboard Digital Leslie, which features deeper authenticity, including rotor airflow, to faithfully reproduce the Leslie cabinet’s unique tone and 3-dimensional swirling effect. A new tube modeling system provides characteristic tube warmth and gritty growl when driven hard.

Classic Transistor Combos and Pipe Organs

Beyond the tonewheel, Hammond’s Wave Composition system adds the vintage Italian, British, and Japanese Transistor Combo Organ Voices, which have come back into vogue in a big way. In addition, the SK Pro offers a full range of Pipe Organ voices — including a brand-new selection of Theater Pipe Organs. No matter the genre, the SK Pro is ready to ace the gig.

The Piano/Ensemble engine

The SK Pro also features an all-new Piano/Ensemble engine with a wide variety of keyboards and other instruments, including acoustic and electric pianos, brass, reeds, strings, choirs, and percussion. The high-resolution samples of the world’s leading acoustic grand pianos are noteworthy, particularly the stunning new “S” sample of a legendary European grand. And for the first time in an SK series keyboard, all Piano/Ensemble voices can be fully edited. Sample choice, EG (envelope generator), Filter, LFO, and other parameters are now under your control and can be saved as a Patch. A total of 162 high-definition digital voices (with upgraded resolution compared to previous SK models) provide a broad variety of tonal possibilities. All voices (many new to the SK line) have been carefully curated for their usefulness in real-world musical settings. Onstage, you’ll appreciate the 12 Category buttons that allow effortless, instantaneous sound selection, and Hammond’s proprietary ProChord feature (available on many voices) that lets you produce complex harmonies by playing a single-note melody while playing chords with your left hand.

The Mono Synth engine

The SK Pro packs a beastly physical-modeling synthesizer that faithfully reproduces the sounds of classic analog synthesizers. The Mono Synth engine offers six different Oscillator configurations, as well as controls for Filter and Amplitude, allowing you to create and tweak your sounds in real time, just as on a vintage analog synth.

Powerful onboard DSP Effects

The SK Pro is equipped with a powerful onboard DSP Effects engine. Each of the SK Pro’s four Voice Sections can be assigned Overdrive and two types of comprehensive DSP Multi-Effects. Overdrive flavors include Tube, Solid-state, Clip, and EP Amp; and the two Multi-effects engines offer Tremolo, Wah, Ring Modulator, Compressor, Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Delay, and Auto Pan.

Combinations and Favorites

The SK Pro introduces Combinations to the SK series, which allow you to prepare Patches from any or all of its four tonal sections, along with your desired performance parameters. You can also assign external MIDI instruments to these Combinations. Combinations set you up for each performance and can be changed in an instant. In conjunction with the four Allocation buttons in the center of the keyboard, you can call up any part of a Combination in real time, giving you the equivalent of four discrete keyboard instruments. In all, 200 Combinations are available (100 Factory, 100 User). For instant access, any 10 of these may be assigned to the Favorites buttons (as on previous SK models). The role of the Favorites has been expanded to include 10 Banks of Favorites, easily called up with a single key stroke.

Hammond SK Pro 73

Some background. Played a B3 over 25 years so I know what it should sound like.
I had the SK 1 and sold it for the SK Pro 73. Organ sounds and Leslie are excellent. Pianos and EP's a little better than the SK1.
I agree how to save patch/combinations takes some time to get used to. Great news, Hammond just came out with a 624 page REAL manual. It covers everything.
The secret is to remember you cannot change a factory patch or combination. Save it as a USER patch or combination. So you have can have USER combinations, organs, pianos, ensembles and Synths.

If you have a great B3 Jimmy Smith factory patch, save it as a USER patch (ie Bobs B3). Now you can use that patch with any USER combination that you want. Want to make tweaks to that B3 sound? Then save, create more clones ie, Bobs B3 #2 and Bobs B# #3 Marys flute, Marys flute #2.

You can then create USER combinations with either factory or user patches. (Organ Bobs B3, Marys Electric piano, a factory ensemble, and a mono synth.)

In regards to the person who will only create 10 favorites and not use the other 90 favorites. Best of luck.

By looking at my patch list below, I know exactly what bank of favorites I'm at.
Here's what I did. Create a Word document with a table and print them out. Easy peasy.

Bank 5-1 Bank 5-2 Bank 5-3 Bank 5-4 Bank 5-5
Bobs B3 Booker T organ etc etc etc
Bobs piano Factory EP
Marys flute Brass synth
Lead synth

Bank 5-6 Bank 5-7 Bank 5-8 Bank 5-9 Bank 5-10
Winwood etc etc etc etc
factory organ
Marys clav
factory trumpet
smokin synth

Hammond Sk Pro - 73

Hi,

I am learning keys, but been a rhythm guitar player for over 50+ years (should of started years ago on keys as it would of helped my guitar playing/understanding no end). I got the SK1 - 88 at the start of the UK COVID lockdown in March 2020 and pretty well loved it. However the limit of 10 storage banks stopped me using everything else easily. The Pro came out in Jan/Feb 2021 and I ordered the 73 keyboard from Tony White at Bonners in Reigate, purely because of the extra storage, the extra voices and the Leslie switch near where the old 'Hlf Moon' would sit. It is a great keyboard but now I've fully retired last year I don't seem to have the free time to learn as I anticipated ... My grief is the same as the review above, I couldn't get my head around the storage and retrieval of the banks of sounds, therefore at the moment I have given up. My other beef is all the sounds and piano certainly have modulation applied when you boot the thing up. This is very annoying as I can't seem to find out a 'global' change to knock these all out every time I switch on. Other than that it is brilliant but I wished I'd kept the SK1-88 as well (tho' the missus would of beat me up ... again..) and not sold it to my brother (who is also well impressed..). The SK-88 had a great Procol Harum sound for Whiter Shade of Pale which at the moment I can't replicate on the Pro. The previous note about not being about to save just one sound is also worrying which confused the hell out of me .... Maybe Suzuki Hammond will update their firmware to accommodate some of these issues. Thanks, apart from that a really nice keyboard

Wonderful service jacob

I play keys but know nothing really about keyboards. Jacob walked me thru the sale helping me to choose the right product for me or at least I think he did haven't got it yet but yes very helpful and made sure I had all the cables and everything I needed so I could start making music as soon as it gets here!

SK Pro 73 - Awesome stage keyboard.

I've had an opportunity to use this board for several performances now, and I have to say that by far this is the best sounding Hammond clone I've ever heard/played. I have a 1957 B3 with Leslie 122, and also had one of the competitors clones, and the SK73 Pro nails both the Hammond, and Leslie simulator recreation. The other sounds are also very useable IMO (I did used string/pad and piano combo's, and they sounded great live). The action is great, and IMO the user interface is not as bad as what I was kind of anticipating, based on other reviews. I've created a few combo's, have not yet created an custom programs/patches - but I know you can having watched the videos from Jim Alfredson and Tony at Bonner's. I'm hoping Sweetwater's Daniel Fischer will also do a deep dive on this board, and maybe even create some custom combos (as I believe he did for previous versions .. hint!).

On the negative side, I do agree that having to hit the 'bank' button to know which bank of favorites you are in was a miss on Hammonds part - they could have added an indicator in the corner of the display very easily - I'm sure. Maybe on a future upgrade Hammond??? To me this wasn't enough to remove a star - just an annoyance. For the music I'm currently playing, 10 favorites is plenty.

I'm convinced this is probably the best portable Hammond option on the market. The 73 note version gives you enough extra real estate for splits etc. I was going to opt for the double manual version, but decided I wanted the lighter option.

Great sounds & organization

Ion SK1 and I have to say I've worked with other synthesizers but this instrument is phenomenal. It is really well designed. The sound quality is tops. I would imagine that these newer versions have more favorites but I found that it's really not that necessary to have favors because it's pretty easy to get to where you want to be. Also the media fax in the capacity to make the instrument into a full organ or an organ and a piano with 88 keys is pretty amazing. It's too bad they're getting so pricey but I think they're worth it. I've been enjoying the vibraphone Organ patch. The vibraphone with the organ behind it is very jazzy. If you can afford this go for it's really worth it.
