How do I set the nanoKontrol up as a controller for ProTools v6.x-7.x?

Note: this does not work for ProTools v8.x or later.

While ProTools doesn’t support direct MIDI Continuous Controller mapping, it does support the JL Cooper CS-10 which used MIDI CC in it’s control profile.

First, You’ll need the Kontrol Editor software which can be found on Korg’s website HERE

Download and install the CS-10 Legacy MIDI Controller acording to the instructions found on Digidesign’s website HERE

The required programming is covered in the CS-10 manual, which is availble from the JL Cooper website HERE

At the minimum:
Program the faders to cc64-cc72.
Then assign any two buttons to cc28 and cc29 to bank left and right.
Then program the transport to send:
cc23 – Record
cc22 – Play
cc21 – Stop
cc20 – FF
cc19 – RW

MOST IMPORTANTLY, the scene MIDI Ch. needs to be set to ch.16, this is the box above the picture of the nanoKontrol, all the way to the left, in the editor. Then, the rest of the faders groups need left on “scene”.

Following the information in the CS-10 manual, you could go further and assign buttons to Mutes or Solos, as well as Function Keys.

Within ProTools, Go to Setup>Peripherals>MIDI Controllers, and set the #1 controller to CS-10 with the Receive From and Send To ports set to the nanoKontrol.
