iLok 101
The iLok is a USB smart key that contains licenses for participating protected software products. A single iLok can store over 100 separate licenses. You can have licenses from multiple software vendors on the same iLok. And multiple iLoks can be connected to a computer to authorize software products. For more information, check out the FAQ at ilok.com

In all cases, it’s important to create an iLok.com account so that your ilok can be registered. This helps protect the licenses on your ilok in case any unforseen distaster occurs.

Software licenses are transferred to the ilok either of a few ways:

  1. Some products, like MOTUs instrument line (MachFive, MX4, Ethno Instrument, etc.) ship with a pre-authorized ilok.
  2. Some products come with a plastic key card (about the size of a credit card) with a small punch-out that slides into the back of the ilok.
  3. Most commonly, licenses are transferred by registering the software with the company who made it. Then a license is transferred to your ilok account. You may then access your online ilok account and move it into your USB iLok key.
* Note Waves uses the ilok, much like step 3, but the entire process is performed directly from waves.com. See our step-by-step Waves authorization page for information on this process.

To create your own iLok.com account, follow these steps:

Step 1:
Start by visiting www.ilok.com

iLok.com Screenshot

Step 2:

Look near the bottom-left of the iLok homepage for the link “Sign Up Now.”

Step 3:

Clicking on this link will direct you to a form to create a New Account Profile for ilok.com. Be sure to enter information into all required fields. Once complete, click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the form.

Step 4:

A page will appear which will ask you to check your email for a message from ilok.com to activate your account. Proceed to your email and wait for this message to arrive. It should take only a few moments. Here's an example of the email you should receive.

Step 5:

Review the message and click the activation link as instructed.

Step 6:

Finally, log in using the User ID and password you created.

Step 7:
In order to allow your iLok hardware key to communicate with your secure online account, you’ll need the iLok Client Software. While viewing ilok.com, click the HELP page, then the DOWNLOADS page. There, select your platform (Mac or Windows) and proceed to download the software.

The download will place an installer program on your computer (most commonly on your desktop) and is named “iLok.com Client Installer” or “ilokclientwin.exe”

Step 8:
Run this installer and follow the steps to place the client software in your computer.

Step 9:
With your iLok plugged into the computer at which you are accessing www.ilok.com, you’ll want to “Identify” your ilok. This allows ilok.com to associate your ilok (and it’s unique serial number) with your account. Making sure you are still logged into your ilok.com account, click the MANAGE page, then VIEW iloks.

At this page, click the Identify button near the bottom. You’ll be prompted to ‘please wait’ while your ilok is being identified. Once complete, the ilok registration process is complete. To authorize software and place the license on your ilok, you’ll want to follow instructions for each different product. See our Digidesign product authorization page for an example.

Our Customers Say...

When it came time to start from scratch with the studio, I had a lot of questions. The Sales Engineers I've worked with are really friendly and patient, and the guidance they provided was invaluable; they basically helped build the studio.
