When I attempt to install software on my Mac with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion, I’m warned that the software “is not from an identified publisher,” and cannot continue. What should I do?

This “Gatekeeper” security feature is new in Mountain Lion.  Software developers can have their products “signed” or approved by Apple to help ensure it is safe to install.   Many developers have not completed this signing process in spite of the fact their software is safe and reliable on Mac.

The first thing you should do is check the source of the applications you’re installing and running on your Mac.  Is it a reliable software developer?  To our knowledge, all of the products we sell for Mac are safe.  For more information on product compatibility with Mountain Lion, click here.  If you’re not sure, ask.  You can always check here at SweetCare Online, or ask your sales engineer.

If you feel confident your software is safe to install on your Mountain Lion system, here are a few ways to bypass gatekeeper.

• To allow one applications to run, simply right-click or control-click on the application.  In the pull-down menu, choose Open.

When alerted again about it not being an identified publisher, click Open again.

• To allow all applications to run without Gatekeeper stopping you, visit Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy.  There set “Allow Applications Downloaded From” to “Anywhere.”
