I have used many field recorders including the Nagra, Zoom H4, PCM-D50 and the Sound Devices 702. The PCM-D1 is in a class by it's self. The microphone pre-amps are very quiet. The built in mics ar... read more [+]e outstanding. The controls & menus are direct and functional. The build quality is outstanding. With the addition of the Sony XLR adapter... I would compare the pre-amp quality to the Sound Devices 702. Not quite up to the 702 but close.
