Works with Logic 8

I needed a control surface mixer to use with Logic 8 for mixing on the go. (Macbook Pro 2.16GHz). This thing works great. It took me a minute to get it working but it can be set up for 36 faders (incl... read more [+]uding out & master out) using the 4 scenes and the transport controls can be used for whatever using the key command functions. You can set the faders buttons and knobs for just about whatever you need to control. Mine is set up for fader-volume, knobs-pan, buttons-mute & solo. I use the last 2 faders in scene 4 for output & master out.
The transport controls are used for play-play/stop, rec-record, rew-rew/bar, fwd-fwd/bar, loop-cycle. YES YOU CAN CONTROL CYCLE WITH THIS BUTTON IN LOGIC 8!

For $60, this is a fully functional mixer and a must buy for anyone. I endorse it and I plan on buying the nanoPad so I won't have to carry my trigger finger around.

Keep making music you love...NOT WHAT PEOPLE THINK IS HOT!

This thing is a real bargain for $60. It was easy to set up to use in Sonar. I've set it up to run my faders, arm tracks for recording and also mute and pan tracks, plus it has the transport control... read more [+]s. It makes the recording process much faster and easier. The controls feel very solid and it operates extremely smoothly. I couldn't have asked for more for the price. close [-]

A ridiculous value - works with PT 8.

by Steve F. from Lubbock, Texas

Music Background:
I had read some web articles on using this device with Pro Tools 8, so I decided to buy one. After spending an afternoon with it, I have to say I'm a little shocked at how well it works for the money... read more [+].

I'm a PT 8.0 user, and up until now have done all my in-the-box mixing by mouse or by drawing lines. I use a 003R with an old Pentium 4, running at 3.0 GHz.

The Sweetwater article on using this with PT indicates that it doesn't work with PT 8, but actually it can be set up to emulate a M-Audio Axiom controller, which is one of PT8's supported devices. The only glitch I've seen is that the pan pots don't work properly in Pro Tools 8 because the rotary controls on the Axiom are the kind that rotate endlessly, they don't have a full up or down position. The result is that the pan pots can only be placed at full left, center or full right using the controller. I don't consider this much of a problem, I just set them with a mouse and don't often automate them. If not for this minor shortcoming, I'd give the device a 5.0 - if you use something besides Pro Tools it probably works more the way you would expect.

Setting it up was a piece of cake. I had found a blog in which the author goes into some detail about the procedure, and even offers for download a scene file that sets up the contoller for use with Pro Tools. The review rules on Sweetwater don't allow posting URL's, but if you search for something like "how to use the korg nanokontrol with protools" it will show up. I used the author's scene file which made things very easy.

After getting it installed and configured, which took maybe twenty minutes, I gave it a spin on a messy mix I've been working on, that is about as dense as my stuff gets. With the exception of the pan pot issue mentioned above, it worked without incident.

When you load the session, the eight faders on the nano are mapped to the first eight tracks of the session. You can "page" back and forth down the mix window, eight tracks at a time, by pushing buttons. It's a little hard to keep track of which faders go to which channels, but for this kind of money it would be asking a lot for any kind of readouts. The faders are very short throw but you get used to it pretty quickly, and the resolution seems ok. The far right fader controls the master track furthest to the right.

It also has a complement of transport controls that are very convenient - I am eager to find out if I can use an extra-long USB cable and have myself a remote for cheap. If so, I think it would be worth the money if that was all it did.

The buttons next to the faders can be used for various functions such as selecting tracks, muting, arming to record and solo.

The controller can also be used to control plug-ins, but I have not tried this yet.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with this device. It's exactly what I was hoping for; a way to get some kind of tactile control without spending much.

Con's - pan-pot issue with Pro Tools; also it has no status indicators of any kind except showing which "scene" is active. (There's a toggle or "flip" button which puts the device into one of two different modes - it would be nice to have a status light for this at least.) close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

Scott Augustyniak
This controller is compact, easy to use, and it fits nicely in front of your computer keyboard. I find myself tweaking the song while playing my guitar at the same time. The transport is so much more convenient than using a mouse. Would highly recommend for anyone who has been mixing right from their software.

Our Customers Say...

My Sales Engineer is the best. If I need it tomorrow, I have it tomorrow. He makes sure everything is in order and that I'm set up right. I've spent a lot of money at other places, too, but I don't remember them calling me to make sure everything's okay.
