Korg nanoKEY 25-key USB MIDI Controller Keyboard at a Glance:
Nano size, not nano features
Korg Kontrol Editor and M1Le software
Nano size, not nano features Korg's nanoKEY is an extremely slim-line USB MIDI controller keyboard. In fact, this little guy is so small it makes your laptop keyboard look big. Yet, Korg managed to pack in all their know-how to deliver the kind of high-quality, great-feeling device we've come to expect. Enjoy full control over your DAW functions and virtual instrument plug-ins with the nanoKEY's 25-note keyboard. You can shift octaves, change pitch and modulation independently, even throw the nanoKEY in to CC (Control Change) MODE to switch the keys to MIDI-assignable parameter controls. Now you don't have to let anything get between you and your music - in the car, on the plane; all you need is your laptop, the nanoKEY, and a set of headphones and you're right back in the studio.
Korg Kontrol Editor and M1Le software Yes, small in size - but Korg's ardent commitment to superb design guaranteed that the nanoKEY would be huge in its features. Despite being an ultra-convenient MIDI controller as it is, you can even download Korg Kontrol Editor software for free and customize the nanoKEY to match your individual needs. Select between three different velocity curves or fixed velocity - or set MIDI Control Change values and edit the minimum and maximum values of control change messages transmitted by the modulation buttons. What's more, the nanoKEY comes with a full copy of Korg's M1Le software which faithfully recreates the sounds of the legendary Korg M1 workstation. In sum? Korg's nanoKEY is a bite-sized beast.

The Korg nano series of controllers offer a scalable and versatile soultion for studios and the traveling musician. Lightweight and lean, these controllers take up very little real estate on your desktop or at a live show, maximizing the little space you may need to work with.
I have been waiting for years for something like this
by Mike from Madison, WI February 2, 2009 Music Background: composer
I am a huge fan of Korg's Nanokeys. As a composer who often travels, this is a wonderful and portable way to enter notes. It is tiny and light, and has a slick lights mechanism to let you know which ... read more [+]octave you're in. Thank you, Korg. close [-]
nano KEY rocks!
by Leo S. from Minneapolis, Minnesota November 20, 2008 Music Background: self taught composer
Blown Away! Yeah it is that good! Korg really out did themselves on the nano products. Many times I've read things by other manufactures claiming to change the world of music. The specs say one thing ... read more [+]and very often what you get is a piece of junk not even close to the specs. You won't find this with Korg's nano products. When they say velocity, THEY MEAN VELOCITY! The nanoKEY has real velocity sensing, AMAZING. KORG has always provided things ahead of thier time. But with the nano KEY they are light years ahead. I like it so much I bought two,and they both work at the same time. This allows me to have a true four octave keyboard. I can play chords with the left hand while playing a lead line in the same octave, or two, three, four, five, ect. higher/lower. A true four octave keyboard. These nano's rock. close [-]
An extremely portable midi controller keyboard at a great price
by Dagoberto Grajeda from Las Cruces, NM November 14, 2008 Music Background: Student
The first thing that I could not get over is its small size. I knew it was small but I was not expecting its actual size. It is something you have to see for yourself. It has a good feel to it as you ... read more [+]play it. The keyboard has many features in a small size. It is perfect for traveling on the road with your laptop. You can download from the Korg website a copy of the M1Le Software and register it with the serial number included in the box. I comes with a usb cable and a discount for Ableton Live. It is a great product and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable keyboard. close [-]
It is what it is.
by Mark from Outside of Philadelphia Pa. June 9, 2009 Music Background: Pro Musician, Recording Engineer, Producer
Let's get this out of the way first:
for portability, price, feature set (including crude velocity sensitivity), and low "desktop/backpack/computer bag real estate", there is no better... read more [+] value (SO FAR). For the price, it also can make a hip wall mounting - this diem's Objet d'art.
It works, generally that is, for real time entry of 2 - 4 voices. You can even play much more polyphonically, two handed, if you have small hands and fingers and are willing to learn new voicings. You can even "excel within its limitations" in tapping in bass/drum lines, legato multinote pads, or monophonic leads. All of this is great, considering that when you are done you can hide it anywhere, or remount it on the wall as KORG eye candy. It is cool, but no Steinway.
Here are the nano negative KEY points to consider as you make your decision:
(These are all true for my unit - YMMV)
1) the keys do pop off, even with pretty gentle use.
2) you certainly can easily replace the popped keys if you have steady hands, some patience, and an inquisitive mind. So far, I've done this three times and should have U tubed the method. I was intrigued to learn KORG's bada_ _ implementation of keystrike and rebound.
3) The keys are uneven, both physically in height, and also in terms of what we pianists would call regulation. In other words, the velocity sensitivity varies among the keys. Importantly, some keys do not fire at all if hit too high or low.
4) It is very difficult to play certain chords with one hand (e.g., an Ab, Db, Db+ etc.) Beware: for good reason the Cs,Es, Fs, and B's do not extend past the white row. (They could, if engineered with a ridge)
Nevertheless it is possible to deliver a virtuoso performance on the instrument if you compose for the instrument, and/or do not mind hitting certain notes with the first phalynx of one or two fingers flexed backwards. (So, don't readily believe some of the U tube wizards strutting stuff. We can play on anything and make it work.)
In summary: I am happy I bought it. I love looking at it; the name "KORG" is lit by an LED. It is a perfectly good MIDI entry tool within the limitations above, and with all the perks as listed. I enjoyed learning its nanosecrets.
It is not a GOTO performance keyboard for a real player. But it might do in a pinch if you have ADVIL on hand, and donlt mind misfingerings.
I might have another look at those roll up MIDI keyboards until the new Novation arrives. The nanoKEY on a roll up, up might make a nice sculpture. close [-]
