This doesn't need MIDI

Nice analog device that is really low cost but a good build. Ideal for guys like me that prefer to work from banks of samples. I can use this to record into audacity, export wave files, then use my sampler to adjust pitches, stretch sustain, and make music using a variety of samples from this machine. If you're the kind of guy that has to have his keyboard plugin to the device and record it into your daw then master a track, it's not really for you. If you want to do that with this, get sampling software (I use Maschine for this) that allows you to load up a sample and going into pad mode allows you to control the sample as if you were sending midi to the device. Now, since you can't adjust the parameters from the synth in real time, it's going to function like a SoundFont, but if you like to focus more on getting the sound to blend with your other tracks by using it inside your DAW, this is an ideal device. Especially for being only 50 bucks!

A Unique Instrument

I really like the Monotron DUO. I was surprised at the wide variety of sounds it can produce. The cross modulation produces some very interesting sounds, and the ability of tuning the oscilllators apart is useful musically.
Also, the ability to set the mode to chromatic intervals, or glide mode, is great. I usually set it in the latter. In glide mode, rocking the finger to and fro on the ribbon will produce a nice vibrato. I enjoy playing the filter too, which will "wow" nicely with resonance set 2-3 o'clock.
It sounds good plugged into an amp, and I often run it through effects, particulalry echo/delay.
The DUO seems built better than the original monotron, and to me seems sturdier. It is quieter too, and the DUO does not have a noise issue like its predecessor.
The DUO is a unique instrument. I really enjoy mine.

Needs midi

This thing needs midi, because it's basically unplayable with that tiny ribbon keyboard. I like the simplicity and price, but it's nearly useless. like iphone synth apps.
