Minimoog in da Box - Same Fat Growling and Creamy sound
by Jeff Renold from USA, March 2007
I bought this software analog mono synth emulation as a try out to see how it performs and sounds compared to my friends Moog Voyager rack, which is the in a different price league. The Minimoog V came with version 1 and it sounded great (in a analog way) and very playable. The sound was analog all the way, no digital give aways. I soon found out that it been updated toa new 1.5 version, which had a revamped sound engine, making it much closer to a real minimoog with an improved filter, minimoog like waveforms and a more stable oscillator. These things alone are enough to change the sound to a whole new level, and it really did in my opinion. Once i installed 1.5, i could hear the difference like nothing else from the first version i had installed. The sound was naturally analog with that unique drift character that remains after a note release. The closer emulated minimoog waveforms really made the minimoog v sound fatter than the previous version. The waveforms are much fatter. The improved filter now has that same growl as i hear on my friends Voyager, same smooth whistle and goes into self oscilation with a perfect down tone. The lead sounds are amazing and very easy to programme with instant moogish sound. I love the bass sounds in ths synth, very very fat indeed. The Voyager at my friends has always been a favourite sound of mine, always a joy to programme, and the minimmog v was no different. I came up with many sounds that replicated his voyager with like for like detail. I A/B'd with some of my finished Voyager tracks composed at my friends place. I could not even tell the slightest difference, thats how good the minimoog v really is. It's one hell of an inspiring synth to play and record. This synth is the one to by, but try it first. I have compared this to the Minimonsta, and it blows it away. The minimonsta had a good moog sound, but it's waveforms are not as fat or as free flow like the minimoog v. This makes a huge difference. I will say one thing though, the best thing to do is turn off the chorus and delay on the minimoog v to get the best out of it, though sometimes it helps add dimension to certain sounds.
