By harnessing the powerful Radias sound engine, the microKORG XL now offers 128 sounds - from fat basses to thick pads - and features 17 KAOSS effects right onboard. Three large knobs let you get inside each sound, and an included Editor Librarian helps you edit and organize your sounds on your computer screen. Rich analog sound, derived from the R3/Radias technology Korg borrowed technology from their famous R3 and Radias synths, to give the microKORG XL its most incredible-sounding engine ever. It offers up 128 sounds right out of the box - from massive leads to fat basses to unbelievable arpeggios. Plus, onboard external audio inputs let you connect up any audio source and use it as the waveform, then processing it with the microKORG XL's robust synthesizer engine. You'll also love the 17 onboard effects, derived from Korg's KAOSS pad system - there are rich reverbs, colorful choruses, and massive decimation and distortion effects. Plus, there are also grain shift, several types of delay, flanger, and more. You can apply two effects at a time to any program or multi-timbral performance. Ultra-compact size - with optional battery power The microKORG has always been Korg's mini-but-massive synthesizer, and now it's even more prepared to be your portable music-making companion. The microKORG XL can be powered via AC power when you want, but it can also now be powered by batteries - so you can jam in the car, out in the backyard, or wherever your music takes you. Built-in 16-band vocoder Korg has beefed up the vocoder onboard the original microKORG and packed the microKORG XL with a 16-band vocoder, complete with an included detachable gooseneck microphone. You can use the attached microphone to perform with wild vocoded vocals. Or, you can switch to the external inputs and run any source through the microKORG XL's vocoder. Easily navigable LCD screen with 3-knob control surface Get to your sounds more easily than ever, using the microKORG XL's onboard LCD screen. Grab its three knobs and explore full edit mode, choosing filters, adjusting AMP, EG, and LFO settings, adding effects, equalizing the sound, and saving it all right there on the spot. There's also a new virtual patch mode, which lets you assign certain aspects of synthesis to control others - maybe let an LFO modulate the filter cutoff, or set the modulation wheel to control EG1's relase time - it's up to you. Up to six virtual patches are available per program. USB-MIDI connection, with included Editor/Librarian software The Korg microKORG XL features a USB connection, so it can interact with your computer via MIDI. What's more, it also comes with an Editor Librarian, so you can edit your sounds on the full screen and also easily navigate through them and organize them however works best for you. On delivery of this little keyboard wonder, I first thought: "KORG have put out a toy piano".August 4, 2011 Music Background: Songwriter However, on powering it up and pressing the keys, I was soon to realize this was no toy! I tried ou... read more [+]t all the pre-programmed instruments, from both the A & B banks. Easy! I also found the controls (knobs and dials) were robust and easy to use..Switching between instruments - again easy; just a turn of the Genre and Category dials and a new instrument was ready for play. Shortly after receiving the MicroKorg XL, I just had to experiment with all those cool looking options on the right hand side of the keyboard. A change in timbre, filters, effects, arp'ing and so on. Plenty there to keep me up late while I experimented. I was pleasantly suprised with the supplied goose-neck microphone with its' XLR connection! The vocoder is the real "FUN" part. I found the software editor program just as easy to use.No hassles in setting this up or having the hardware talk to the software. The only disappointment was in the ultra-light weight body;it felt a little too much like a toy., compared to the knobs and levers on top of the keyboard unit. Overall, a great addition to your musical instrument collection; it it light and very portable - so much so, that KORG have even enabled it to run off 6 AA batteries, so you can take it camping, to the beach, a party, or wherever! Thanks KORG, A great little all-round close [-] Good for starters.

This thing might look small and wimpy, but don't let appearances fool you. The sounds that this thing puts out are HUGE. It has 128 voices (and a great variety of sounds), an arpeggiator, a vocoder, a... read more [+]nd a whole bunch of effects that you can use for any sound. I mean, come on! For that price, why not get it just to add a whole bunch of sounds and flexibility to your arsenal without breaking the bank. You also have the option of running this thing through nice outboard gear to warm it up. Software synths don't compare. I'll summarize the review with this, if you want the perfect starter synthesizer, let this be the one. close [-]

Daniel FisherThis is the easiest prediction I'll ever make: "The microKorg XL is going to be a slam dunk hit." The ratio of pro-quality sounds and features to its small weight, size, and price is huge. It looks like a toy but I promise that it's not. You can take this keyboard with you any time there's even "a chance" that you might get to jam. It can do rock, blues, funk, electronica, dance, hip hop, and maybe even a little jazz. Put a wireless transmitter on it and you can jam anywhere you want. For those of you who geek on synth features, try this: Go to korg.com and download the Mac/PC Editor. You'll see everything presented neatly on the screen. Then you'll understand why I'm crazed about this keyboard.
Carson McClainThis is the keyboard you are going to see dominating the stages at small clubs and local shows. The original MicroKorg is still a hit worldwide, so Korg decided to take this to the next level. I love that this has 128 sounds, a 16-band vocoder, and a USB connection. This even has a piano patch.
