I just upgraded to the i7 iMac from my almost three-year old Core 2 Duo. I was actually planning on going all the way and getting the 8-core Mac Pro, but when news of the imminent release of the Quad ... read more [+]Core iMac with a 27" screen hit the wire I was captivated. I kept second guessing myself till the end, thinking that I would regret not spending twice as much money and getting the Mac Pro and a pair of monitors, but in the end I decided (with the help of my sales rep Josh Sites, the best ever) that the only thing I would really gain with the Mac Pro is a few PCI slots I would probably never use and more critically the internal HD bays. Reluctantly, I pulled the trigger, and having lived with the beast for two weeks now I couldn't be happier.December 2, 2009 Music Background: Pro Musician One of the first things I did was pull up a few of my old projects that used a lot of plug-ins. 15 to 20 instances of Vienna, and couple instances of Amplitube, Superior Drummer, and tons of EQ's and Compressors in Logic. The kind of thing that used to make my poor Core 2 choke a little bit (though it always came through. Love that thing...). The CPU meter in Logic doesn't even flinch with all of this going on, and it runs like a dream. On top of that, it looks positively dreamy on my desk. Oh, what a screen. There is obviously still a strong argument to be made for the Mac Pro (particularly when one wonders what the next incarnation is going to look like), but if your like me and are FireWire based, and just need lots of processing horsepower and RAM (I upped it to 8GB) I think you'll be mighty pleased with this elegant beast. In the bang for the buck contest (in my world the only contest that matters) I can't imagine anything coming close to this. As a side note, in a recent review it came to light that in terms of processing power the i7 iMac actually outperforms the 8-Core Mac Pro. Yeah. close [-]
