From Our Research Team:A great iDea from Ovation!Ovation's iDea represents the merging of two great ideas: a great stage-ready acoustic electric guitar and a super-compact MP3 recorder. The digital recorder is built right into the Ovation preamp, and offers an easy-to-use solution for capturing ideas on the fly. iDea is also loaded with audio lessons pre-installed in the recorder's memory to sharpen your skills, and pitch-stable playback speed adjustment let you slow down recorded material without changing the key for practicing. Take your playing to a new level with the innovative iDea from Ovation.Ovation iDea at a Glance:
How it works The analog circuits in the preamp are activated by either inserting stereo headphones into the headphone jack or by connecting your guitar to an amp or PA with a 1/4" instrument cable. Once you've activated the preamp you've got access to classic Ovation amplified sound, the onboard digital recorder, a built-in mic and tuner, and audio lessons pre-installed that can help you become a better guitarist and songwriter. A small joystick built into the preamp handles the navigation through the feature set. When inspiration strikes, simply hit the record button to arm the recorder, hit it again to start recording. Your ideas are captured so you'll never again lose a moment of genius. USB One of the most exciting features of the iDea preamp is its ability to transfer program material to and from a computer using a standard USB connection. While the iDea comes with a variety of introductory sample material, Ovation has seen to it that a large variety of additional program material is available and constantly updated on the web. The iDea stores program material in the widely used MP3 format. Virtually any MP3 program material can be stored in the preamp's memory. Ovation iDea Features:

June 6, 2010 Music Background: Hobbyist/Aspiring Pro Musician Ovation iDea -- great idea, execution perhaps a bit lacking..
by Robert Sherman from Santa Clara, CA
I bought one of these on a whim (since the prices was an absurd $249) and am rather ambivalent about it. As a tool for recording a rhythm and looping it (to work on lead parts, etc.) it's a great ide... read more [+]a and simple to use. However, when I've tried to record a song with playing and singing, it's been disastrous. The sensitivity of the mic is too low -- perhaps so it doesn't pick up too much of the acoustic sound -- and as a result the singing is totally washed out in the mix. Also, the preamp tone controls don't seem to be engaged in the record mode, so you're pretty much at the mercy of whatever tonal mix was engineered into the system. January 4, 2011 Music Background: Dilettante As far as build quality goes, it's "OK". It is what it is -- a Chinese acoustic guitar -- and is pretty representative of the breed. I think that the fretboard is probably dyed, because it's awfully dark and i think it may be coming off on my fingers (although to be fair, my fingertips always have a bit of darkening after playing any acoustic, probably a result of body chemistry). The finish is analogous to the Gibson Faded Series; i.e. it's rather a misnomer to call it finished. Other than the headstock, it's quite matte both in appearance and to the touch and doesn't feel much different than it would if you took a rattlecan to the top. Speaking of which, the top is really thick. I'm sort of surprised it's as loud as it is (acoustically) because of that, but that may be an artifact of the Ovation back. In terms of playability, the action was perfect when I received it. It is a bit of an adjustment from my other acoustics because it is (as are all Ovations I've played) more like the neck on an electric -- rather thin, and the strings are closer together than on most acoustics. However, once I got used to it, I find that it plays well for me. Anyway -- that's my take on it. For the (discounted) price, it's not too bad, but had I paid the original $5 or 6 bills for it, I would probably be dreadfully disappointed. close [-]
