From Our Research Team:Novation-class USB Synth, MIDI Controller, and Audio InterfaceYou can't spell "Innovation" without Novation, and that pretty much sums up every product that Novation has introduced since their inception 12 years ago. Now they've gone and done it again with the new Novation Xio - an 8-voice polyphonic synth, that's also an audio interface. Oh, and it's also a MIDI controller - all in one compact unit. The Xio comes equipped with what is essentially a new sound engine that offers some pretty incredible onboard sounds, many of which just happened to be programmed by top international producers. One USB cable is all that's needed to turn your computer into a complete workstation for recording, controlling, and synthesizing. Since the Xio is class compliant (no drivers needed for Win XP or Mac OSX), you truly can just plug and play.Novation Xio 25 at a Glance:
Novation-class Synthesizer with New Features The Xio features a mono-timbral Novation synth engine with 8-voice polyphony. In addition to 3 oscillators (17 waveforms each), 1 Filter (varying types), 2 LFOs (32 waveforms each), an arpeggiator and multi-effects board, this subtractive synth also boasts some brand new facilities such as the X-Gator patch programmer. The X-Gator can be made to gate each patch to create unique 16-32 step rhythmic patterns for every onboard sound, all automatically synchronized to MIDI clock from a sequencer; just press and hold one key to groove along to a track with style. Flexible MIDI Controller and High-quality Audio Interface If wanting a compact controller keyboard for studio or live use, the XioSynth is the most flexible and powerful tool on the market. In addition to synthesizing and audio/MIDI interfacing, the keyboard is also a comprehensive control surface with 22 knobs and buttons (doubled to 44 by a Group A/B switch), plus a freely assignable Touchpad and joystick. All of these controls are pre-programmed in 12 of 16 onboard Templates, so that the Xio can instantly control many software applications straight out the box. Add to this many more Templates online, a free Template Editor software application and hybrid modes for simultaneous synthesizing and MIDI controlling, and you have an extremely versatile package for producing or performing. The Xioincludes an ultra-low latency 2 In/2 Out audio interface for high quality recording and playback. This allows you to record a microphone with phantom power, as well as simultaneously stream the onboard synth audio directly to the sequencer via the USB cable. Equally though, a guitar can be plugged straight into the Jack input for DI recording, as well as simultaneously miked, and recorded with outstanding results. High-profile User Patches The Xio features 200 hard-hitting onboard patches, utilizing a new optional filter distortion to produce an even greater range of sounds than on previous synths; from the distinctive clean British sound to the filthiest and grittiest of sonic characters. Furthermore, 60 of the onboard sounds come from internationally acclaimed artists and producers from a variety of musical genres, namely James Zabiela, Ferry Corsten, Rennie Pilgrem, Roots Manuva, Shimon and Skeewiff. As such, every one of the patches on the Xio is eminently and instantly usable for creating synthesized music of any kind. Highly Portable and USB Class-compliant Simply connecting the keyboard over USB is all that's required to start recording, synthesizing and MIDI controlling. As the device is class compliant, no drivers are required for Windows XP or Mac OSX (although some are provided to improve latency and stability in some apps). Furthermore, if wanting to escape the confines of the studio for a while, the USB cable can be unplugged and the Xio can be powered by batteries, functioning as a standalone synth completely separately from the computer. Novation Xio 25 Features:
The Novation Xio is all that's needed to turn your computer into a complete workstation for recording, controlling, and synthesizing.

ReviewsXiosynth- the synth of infinite awesomeness!!!!
by Danny G from Plattsburgh, NY
To paraphrase The Cars, it's just what I needed!October 25, 2008 Music Background: Jam Band Wow! I am floored by the Xiosynth and its amazing capabilities. The pre-sets are sweet, the joystick and pad provide easy modification a... read more [+]nd the entire board is a new waver dream! If your band has to consider space economy, this small wonder is for you. I didn't check the waveforms on an oscilloscope, but the square sounds square to me. This is a funky, new wavey tool with a few patches that mimic non-synth keyboards (Little Ben, for example, is a sweet organ patch). One slight downer- this thing eats batteries quickly. Go with the adapter (included) for uninterrupted techno-destruction!! With great waveforms (and several mono patches), anyone can sound like The Cars or The Rentals just a few minutes after the box is opened. You'll find that the arpegiator takes time to master- in other words, this instrument is a hobby artifact that stays fascinating. I field tested mine two days after getting it. The test run was at a major club show- this thing really got the audience's attention. Patch 150-throaty- will put you in techno-rock Valhalla! I am thrilled- the company should be called YESvation!!! close [-] What an Amazing Little Synth !!!
by Marcus from Germany
Totally blown away, maybe because its a new little beast in my collection of synths. But i have to say that this thing sounds massive, and in my opinion its the best sounding synth after the Virus Ti.... read more [+] I swapped out some of the presets for the X station ones, but some of the Xio presets are great starting points for even greater sounds and complex patches. I love the basics of the synth layout and panel. Its so simple to operate for playing use, and you can dig deeper for the real stuff. Plenty of real time knobs for the size of synth. The sound is bigger than the previous Novations, and i say this from experience. I use to own the A Staion rack for 3 years, and sold it to buy this. The sound difference is worth every penny that the Xio costs. I would describe the sound as gritty and fat, as well as liquid sounding, boyond my old A Station. The pads are awesome with that compex evolving sound with the various filters doing pure damage. The key bed is of high quality and does not feel spongy or toyish like some of the cheaper midi controllers. I cannot believe the range of features this thing carries for the price. I was considering the smaller X Station, but decided to go for the Xio due to the enhanced KS sound engine. The new X Gator and Shape filter makes the Xio a step above the previous Novation synths. Truely amazing. close [-]
January 4, 2007 Music Background: 12 Years playing Amazing Piece of Equipment
by Nikolai from RVA
My first synth was a microKorg, and while it is a good synth in its own right, it is not a good stand alone synth. I needed more capabilities in a synth. I looked at options like getting an ION or a m... read more [+]icroX, but in the end I decided to go ahead and get the XioSynth, because of it's lower price and the sheer amount of features. I'm glad I did, because this was the piece of equipment I needed.September 27, 2006 Music Background: Amateur industrial musician I not only use it as a synth, but as an audio interface as well. It is like an X-Station, only you can't run external audio singals through effects like you could on the X-Station. I like how there are three oscillators, each having the same waveforms and individual controls instead of the limiting oscillator set-up on the microKorg. There's even a filter overdrive that can create some really harsh sounds or just make your sound louder and thicker. The arpeggiator, which can be combined with the gator for slicer-like effects, is very flexible. The effects are okay, they can all be used at the same time if you so choose (not one at a time like the microKorg) and they can be individually edited (very flexibly, I might add, the sub menus help out a lot in that regard). To me, the phaser is a tad weak compared to the one on the microKorg. Since I can use plug-ins on my recorded sound, I'm not too overly concerned about it. You can also assign any effects to the joystick, so whan you move it up and down the effect depth changes. Really advanced stuff! The audio interface feature is amazing. The included USB cable is all you need to literally plug and play. Novation wasn't lying! I used to use a Griffin iMic to hook up my stuff to my laptop, but that produced a terrible hiss that ruined my recording quality. Now all I need is that cable and I can hook up other keyboards, guitars, and microphones to the XioSynth, and I can record them all directly into my computer. There is barely any noticable hiss at all, either. You can control the gain and USB send levels on the XioSynth itself to prevent clipping. The audio interface feature was half the reason I got the XioSynth, and I am very satisfied. This thing is like a studio rather than just a keyboard. All in all, the XioSynth is a huge bang for your buck deal. A lot of the controls are cramped together and the sub menus are sometimes confusing to access, but you get the hang of it in a few days. If that bothers you and you can give up the gator feature, get an X-Station, it has a more laid out interface. This keyboard does everything my microKorg can't do, and then some. They complement and complete each other in almost every aspect. I would highly recommend this synth to anyone looking for an affordable Swiss Army Knife of a keyboard or a beginner to synthesizers in general. close [-] inSync Review

Carson McClainI love Novation bass sounds. Deep, rich, and low is what you get with any of their synths. Novation has affordable synths, functional MIDI controllers, and you don't need to be a synth scientist to figure them out. Dial in your sound and lay down tracks, it's that simple with the great presets they include. Novation Xio25 (25-Key)
