Perfect for Travelling and gigs

by Kerwin Callender from Barbados (West Indies)

When I ordered this guitar, I received it in about three days. That's what I call first class service, with the assistance of Sales Rep Jeff Holman.
I travel fairly often with a group, and it i... read more [+]s sometime a bit tedious having to move with lugguge, a guitar, and a case with an effect processor. So, I was searching for something more compact and convenient, that's when I came across the Xguitar in the Sweetwater catalog.
I checked out the reviews (favorable) and I was ready to go. First of all the price was unbeatable especially with the special on with the free gig bag, expression pedal, headphones, and power supply.
The sound and feel of the guitar is great, and the editing is quite simple. The onboard tuner is a major plus and I find it quite easy to use. Generally, I find the guitar to be a great idea of convenience and compactability, with super sounds and effects.
The only shortfalls are the absence of a tone knob to manually control the tone. Somethings I like to reduce to tone to acquire a more jazzy sound. However, that can be remedied by programing a patch to suit with the treble set low. The expression pedal that came with the bundle was a bit sharp in sweeping through the wah effect, so I use a yamaha FC-7 pedal instead to acquire more sweep.
The guitar was definitely a good buy, no regrets here. The feel is immaculate, especially after I adjusted the action to suit my taste, changed the strings from 9s to 10s, and floated the bridge for more whammy effect.
It looks great even though it only comes in black, but I believe more colours could be an option in the future. close [-]

Set up and ready to go right out of the box.

by Eleventh Earl of Mar from California USA

Music Background: hobbyist
I spotted this device in a Guitar magazine buyers' guide.

I forgot about it for a couple of weeks, and then saw it online. So I checked out Alesis' web site and listened to the demos. I... read more [+] had to see this thing for myself, so headed off to the nearest guitar store, in Canoga Park, California.

When I eventually managed to attract the attention of the twelve year old that appeared to have a job that involved avoiding eye contact with customers if at all possible, I asked to try the Alesis X GUitar.

The floor model had dead batteries, so the child ran off into the bowels of the building, and eventually appeared bradishing a large cardboard box, baring the legend 'Made In China'. As a child I remember people having the same attitude to Japanese goods that people currently have to Chinese wares - they thought they were cheap and shoddy. And we all know what happened - 'made in Japan' became a badge of quality and eventually Japanese goods became way too expensive...

Well pay attention, because Chinese made goods are getting better all the time, and China is towering like a Collossus over us, and shall be for the foreseeable future. Right now these things are being churned out at bargain prices, so grab them while you can.

So we got this guitar out of the box, and it was set up better than any guitar I've ever bought. Indeed it was set up at least as well as any guitar I've taken to an expensive specialist to have set up.

It needed tuning of course, so I used the built-in tuner, and had it ringing like a bell after a minute or so. I wanted to try it through headphones, but they didn't have any lying around, so I plugged into a Fender amp. I'm a bit self conscious about fiddling with guitars in guitar shops, as I can just imagine the guys that work in those places must have 200 bad guitarists coming in each day, and not buying anything. I'm not bad, but at that point I wasn't convinced I was going to buy the thing, despite the great price. So I felt like one of the throng.

There was already a bad guitarist in the place, playing lots of very boring beginner blues very badly, and very loudly. He was still there when I left. I didn't feel bad drowning him out with some shredding and generally loud rhythm as I messed with the settings. This guitar has some great effects, good thick distortion and has a basic sound of a Strat, which is essentially what it is. It feels like a Strat, and has the overall look of a Strat, and I liked it as much as my 1997 Fender.

In fact the Alesis has a better action and faster neck than my genuine Stratocaster.

So it didn't take long for me to realise that i couldn't live without this thing. I handed over my card and grabbed some extra strings, and went home.

I spent the last couple of hours fiddling away with the X Guitar and my first impressions were reinforced. It's a great fun instrument with superb portability. I can take it to work and practice almost silently during lunch, and the plethora of effects will be an inspiration. I think all guitarists respond differently to different effects - I certainly do.

I highly recommend the X Guitar to all players, but if you're on a tight budget and you need as much bang for your buck as possible, this is surely it. close [-]

Hot Stuff!

by Andre Barlow from Cape Town - South Africa

Music Background: Semi pro musician and collector of guitars
I have a Fender Strat, Telecaster, Riverhead and a Aria pro2 Cardinal guitar and have been gigging with a Rock Band for 5 years now in Cape Town, South Africa. I needed to practice with effects, but ... read more [+]going down to my home studio and set up the whole amp and effects pedal was a hassle, because everything is packed away for the next gig. I saw an e-mail ad from an opposition company for a practice guitar with built in effects and spoke to my local music shop about getting one in for me. They were not keen on the quality of this guitar and guided me to Sweetwater to look at the XGuitar. The reviews got my interest and I ordered one. I'm so glad I did, because it is a great guitar and plays beautifully out the box. Lovely action, and I concur that you need to tweek the effects. Maybe I'm not good at reading manuals, but I did find it difficult at first to program the effects. I love the humbucker pickup and the guitar is quite light in weight. The only thing that I do not like about the guitar is the bridge. The tremelo mechanism is not as flexible as my Strat and you cannot fit graphite saddles because the bridge is too narrow. I concur that this is easily remedied by fitting a Strat bridge, which I intend doing. I wish I had this guitar sooner, because when I played at a recent gig, there was a poor power supply and it affected my Zoom pedal. I was using a 9v transformer and have never used batteries. The result was that I had to go through the desk with no effects! My amp was affected too. The XGuitar will always be my backup guitar, because this will never happen again! I intend on playing live with it as well for certain songs and it looks great! My local music shop was blown away by the XGuitar and will probably sell them in the future. close [-]

Not great, but cheap

You might buy one of these so you'll have a "beater" guitar hanging around your studio any time you, or someone else, need to do a quick part. Just don't count on all the tones being useful for recor... read more [+]ding -- when the neck pickup is on you can hear clock noise from the electronics.

Also, if you're not good at setting up your own instruments, have Sweetwater set it up for you. It'll be worth the fees. The one I got came out of the box with a VERY straight neck -- too straight, and the truss rod can't be adjusted. I had to shim the neck (the shutters from old floppy discs make very good shims, by the way) to get the action to a decent level on the lower part of the neck.

The digital effects are neat but not world-class.

If you're thinking about buying one for a beginning guitarist -- skip it. Go on to some of the Epiphone guitars you can find here -- they're MUCH better. close [-]

Alesis X Guitar Surprised Me!

by Richard from Las Vegas
February 1, 2005
Music Background:
As a professional musician and recording artist for many years I became hooked on the so called industry standard electric guitars (i.e Fender Strats, Les Paul's) because of their consistent play... read more [+]ability and sound. When I purchased the X Guitar for nothing more than convenient headphone playing, I assumed it would be in the league of the typical $300 Squier or Epiphone style guitars. Boy was I wrong. Maybe I just got a good one, but this thing absolutely equals any of my $1000 to $2000 guitars. The sustain is remarkable, the neck is faster than any Strat I own and the weight is perfect. But the built in Alesis presets and completely editable parameters have been the icing on the cake. The effects are stellar!!!! Remember, Alesis has been making some of the industry's best keyboards, ADAT's and effects processors for years. Yes, the X Guitar is made in China, and that threw me for a loop, but at least it's not stamped on the headstock. Of note: the ads show a maple colored headstock without brand name, but mine arrived with a black headtock with Alesis and X Guitar printed. I would play the guitar on stage, I would use it in the studio. The only negative I've found on the guitar is in the bridge. The individual string bridge screws are very sharp and need filing. (Especially noticable if you rest your hand over the bridge for string dampening.) Also the bridge doesn't appear to be made of the finest steel. Of course the remedy is simple, just purchase a genuine Fender bridge ($50) and replace the whole thing in a couple of minutes. Overall, I'm extremely impressed with the feel and playability of this guitar. P.S. Out of the box, the action was perhaps one of the best of any electric guitar I've ever played. As I say, maybe I just got a good one, but I think Alesis has manufactured a guitar that will have Fender running to the drawing board. It would be nice to have a choice of colors instead of basic black. Alesis, if you read this - how about a sunburst model? close [-]
