Superb Processor For The Money
by D.J. from Monterey, TN U.S.A., October 2008
Music Background: Recording Engineer, Live Sound Engineer, Vocalist
I originally bought this processor to use live for its special-effects voices (telephone voice, Giant, Cyborg, etc.), and it is absolutely PERFECT for these apps. What I did not expect was that the quality of all its effects is much greater than I would ever expect from a processor in this price range. I even use the "telephone voice" from this processor when recording in the studio, as I prefer it to the plug-in I own. On the technical side, you will get higher quality from a more expensive processor like the TC Helicon VoiceLive or Digitech's own Vocalist Live series, but you will also enter a much different price point. You will also not get the ease of use from anything made by TC Helicon. The bottom line is that this piece will do a killer job for you in 99% of all live environments, and even has some use in the studio as I pointed out earlier. You simply will not come close to this level of performance and quality in this price range from any other manufacturer that I know of. I have not used the recording software that this piece comes with, as I already own a ProTools-based DAW, but the Vx400 is worth more than it costs all by itself, even without the USB connectivity and recording software. If you are even thinking about buying one of these, do it. For what it costs, I guarantee that you will have nothing to complain about.

Love this thing

Music Background: Keyboard and Garage Band Junkie
I have been looking for something to run keyboards and mic to the Mac for Garageband and this thing is just awesome. Came shipped with a bunch of Windows software, but nothing for OS so I called customer support and their response was "just plug it in' THAT was the extent of the setup! Seamless interface, and gave me a clean way of setting up my Samson KM140 and Motionsound KBR3d as playback monitors. Very cool. I know I havent scratched the surface on this thing but having a great time learning. Mac users will love it. (only small gripe....no OS based recording software....but didnt matter to me as a garageband user)
If you are a singer/songwriter/musician then this is for you!

I set it up the same night I got it and ended up jamming along with the built in drum patterns for hours. Tons of fun. Just plug your guitar and mic in select an FX and away you go.
Sound Quality: 10
My vocal and guitar never sounded fatter and warmer. I have used tube preamps in the studio and this little unit comes pretty
close to a professional pre. The FX are very good. Maybe too many funky FX's. I just decided just to use mic modeling, Preamp, compression, plate reverb and delay and store my own personal setting. Recording through USB was very clean and when
playing live it was very quite.... no buzzing or anything like that. Clean all round.
Reliability: 8
Very solid metal unit that looks like it was built by a tank manufacturer. However on the software side of it ProTracks
(Which comes with the VX400) often picks up background pc processors which messes with the recording and playback of the
track and can cause the track to crash. I'm trying to work around this problem by disabling background processors on my PC.
Customer Support: 10
I emailed Digitech support a couple questions and they got back to me in 1-day.
Overall Rating: 9
The VX400 is my best friend now and will go everywhere with me...on stage and in the studio. :-)
My biggest complaints are:
a) It took me almost 2 hours to install the software
b) The ProTracks software picks up background PC processors which messes with the recording and playback of the track and can
cause the track to crash.
c) Those dial a setting knobs are a little confusing. I wish they just used buttons.
d) Headphone output could use a volume control. The output is a little on the low side but it does the job.
This is a great little unit. It's pretty simple to use and is very flexible. It's a vocal effects processor, a mixer, usb computer-recording interface, drum machine, guitar effects processor, mic modeler, preamp, and compressor. What is there not to love about this unit?
I can see more of these types of floor processors coming out in the future. If you are a singer/songwriter/musician then this is the unit for you. What it's not is a multi FX unit for electric guitars. However it has all the FX's you need for acoustic/electric guitar.
