From Our Research Team:

Vintage Heritage - Contemporary Minimoog!

The Minimoog Voyager Synthesizer is a monophonic analog performance synthesizer. It incorporates virtually all of the sound resources and functions of the original Model D Minimoog, which was produced by Moog Music, Inc. from 1970 to 1982. It has many new additional features, including a three dimensional touch surface, MIDI IN and MIDI OUT implementation, extensive patching facilities, and a large number of new panel features.

Of the 896 user accessible presets, 704 come pre-loaded with patches from Nigel Hopkins, Brian Kehew, Will Alexander, Bernie Worrell, Drew Newmann, Amos Gaynes, Steve Dunnington, Aron Magner, Chad Hugo, Darrell Diaz, Frank Lucas, Fred Wreck, Gabrial McNair, Geoffrey Keezer, Herbie Hancock, Khari Simmons, James Lumb, Jamie Muhoberac, Joseph Rivers, Neil Palmer, Printz Board, Randy Cantor, Rick Wakeman, Mark Kline, Zon Vern Pyles, Thomas Wolf.

Additionally, V3.0 adds the following capability to the Voyager: The External Mixer knob (just right of the display panel) has a dual function that allows you to rapidly change presets as opposed to continuously punching the cursor buttons. MIDI enhancements allow you to send either 7 or 14 bit resolution from the Mod Wheel, and optionally reduces the amount of MIDI data being sent from the Touch Surface.

The signal path starts with a bank of three wide-range, high-stability voltage controlled oscillators, one noise source, and one audio preamplifier for externally-applied audio signals. The sound modifiers are two Moog filters and one stereo VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier). Modulation sources are two ADSR (Attack Decay Sustain Release) envelope generators and one multiwaveform LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator).Control devices include a 44-key keyboard with velocity and afterpressure outputs, pitch bend and modulation wheels, a three dimensional touch surface, and many control/pedal input jacks.

The Minimoog Voyager has a hinged, multi-position panel and a solid hardwood cabinet. The power supply accepts any power voltage from 100 volts to 240 volts.

We install a new operating system and sounds
All of us here are very excited about the current and future possibilities offered by this the Voyager. To help get you started we have included Sweetwater's Voyager 3.5 CD-ROM with the updating software, bonus presets, updated manuals, and Demo versions of the Mac & PC Voyager Editor/Librarian.
The Sweetwater Service team has already updated your Moog Voyager to the latest 3.5 Operating System, which optimizes the user interface, adds new sounds, and programs, plus:
  • MIDI Panic Function - Allows the user to select whether or not to send a MIDI All Notes Off message when the MASTER switch is pressed.
  • Storage Mode - This sets the behavior after a preset is stored. The user is prompted: Go to stored Preset after Saving? If YES is chosen in this screen, then after a preset is stored to a new location the UI goes to the new location. If NO, then after a preset is stored the current location is maintained in the UI.
  • Glide Modes - There are now 8 glide modes. 1 of 8 is stored in a preset.
  • Mode 1: Normal Glide (glide is always on)
  • Mode 2: Legato Glide (glide is only on when you play legato)
  • Mode 3: Legato Glide to 2nd Only (glide is off when not legato, when the first note of a legato phrase is played, and when returning to the first held note of a legato phrase. Glide is on for the 2nd + notes of a legato phrase.)
  • Mode 4: Legato Glide back to First only (glide is off when not legato, when the first note of a legato phrase is played, and when subsequent notes are legato, glide is on when returning to the first held note of a legato phrase)
  • Mode 5: Legato 1st Note (Glide is on if not playing legato and is Off when playing legato)
  • Mode 6: Mode 4+5 combined (this is Glide mode 4 and 5 combined)
  • Mode 7: Legato back to first = glide off (Glide is On when not playing legato, and when playing legato but is turned off when returning to the first held note of a legato phrase)
  • Mode 8 : Legato Glide toggling (for legato playing, glide is on for two notes, then off for two notes)
  • Quick Save - If a preset has been edited, pressing the Master switch twice saves the preset to the present location.
  • Sound Category Browse - If Enter is pressed, the Preset advances to the next available sound in the bank or in the subsequent bank with the same sound category - this is useful for searching for all lead sounds, bass sounds, percussion sounds etc... pressing Enter AND Cursor goes backwards in the progression of the sounds in that category.

Minimoog Voyager Performer Features:
  • Oscillators Module: Three wide-range, high stability VCO's (Voltage Controlled Oscillators) with continuously-variable waveforms.
  • Mixer Module: Five-input mixer for combining the audio sources prior to filtering.
  • Filters Module: Dual mode filter module includes dual lowpass and highpass-lowpass filtering. Dual lowpass mode consists of two Moog lowpass-resonant filters in parallel, one per output channel. Highpass-lowpass mode consists of Moog lowpass filter in series with a highpass filter.
  • Envelopes Module: The Envelopes Module generates two wide-range ADSR (Attack Decay Sustain Release) envelopes. The Filter Envelope sweeps the filter and is available for modulation shaping. The Volume Envelope shapes the overall volume.
  • LFO Module: Low Frequency Oscillator generates triangular, square, Sample & Hold, and smoothed Sample & Hold waveforms for use as modulating signals.
  • Modulation Busses Module: Selects the sources, destinations, and shaping signals for the MOD WHEEL bus and the EXT PEDAL/ON bus.
  • Output Module: MASTER VOLUME, HEADPHONE VOLUME
  • Glide and Fine Tune Module: GLIDE varies the speed at which the keyboard voltage changes, from instantaneous to several seconds. FINE TUNE adjusts the overall tuning of the instrument.
  • 44 KEY KEYBOARD produces Pitch, Gate, Velocity, and Pressure control outputs.
  • WHEELS: Pitch Wheel bends pitch over a range of up to +/-1 octave. Mod wheel controls the gain of the MOD WHEEL bus.
  • THREE DIMENSIONALTOUCH SURFACE provides three continuously-variable control signals which are derived from the up-down and left-right position of the player's finger, and the amount of area with which the player makes contact to the surface.

Best customer service I've ever encountered. My guitar arrived ahead of the date it was supposed to, in flawless condition. Played well right out of the box. I will be buying all of my gear from you, from here on out. You made me feel like I was ordering a custom guitar, just for me. I was treated like a valuable customer.

So convienient

This thing is amazing! You can easily store presets, view them on the screen, and cycle through them with ease. There really isn't a whole lot of need for CV expansion, unless you personally feel you want to experience a modular like synth. So many different tones can be birthed by being able to use more than one oscillator at once! But my personal favorite feature is the mod wheel, you can dial in some super filthy bass tones and use the filters to wobble them with ease, instead of having to twist a knob! But if you were to have to twist one of these knobs live, they (well, at least those pitch ones I spoke of for arpeggiating) easily click to the next setting, so this thing is really crafted to perfection from what I experienced. I only got to play on one for about 10 minutes, but I fell in love with it. close [-]

HISTORICAL SYNTH

by goodnoize 43 from Santa Fe, NM USA

Music Background: 25 years band musician, soundman, and recording hobbyist
Long ago, as far back as the early 60's, there were Moogs, and they pretty much started everything in the way of analog synths. Musicians got bored with Hammond B3, Clavinet, and Fender Rhodes keyboar... read more [+]ds, and quickly picked up this amazing instrument to expand their creativity further. We hear Moogs on most 70's rock, MTV 80's NewWave hits, and we even hear Moogs making the sound effects of spaceships and machinery on old science fiction movies. Some of the sounds on the 60's TV show Star Trek were made with the Moog. There is nothing anywhere that can compare with the Voyager, in looks, sounds, or feel. The Moog Voyager is a genuine hands down analog synthesizer that will keep you playing it for hours. The look and feel of this synth is just too amazing! It is housed in a genuine wood cabinet, and the control panel is pure retro; old-style science-fair knobs and rocker switches, and the touch pad works on an x-y axis, and by placing different degrees of finger pressure on it, you can modulate the sounds in some pretty interesting ways. Don't be afraid of the Voyager because it is monophonic (one note at a time). When founder Robert Moog was designing the Voyager, his concept was to give a single played note the best tonal shaping capabilities possible, and if this would of been done polyphonic-wise, the architecture of the controls on the Voyager would have not been possible. The Voyager plays one note at a time, but it is a very complicated note; you can vibrate it, squiggle it, arpeggiate it, and even drone it, and more! It has three variable ocillators, two filters, and an lfo source. Also your standard pitch and mod wheels can be assigned from two modulation sources, and there is a digital lcd screen with 7 banks of 127 presets each, which can all be edited and saved to users. The Voyager sounds thick and creamy, Pure Analog pleasure! Basses, leads, Frampton guitar talk box, wah wahs, and weird sounding special fx can be played on it, and if you need more, you can run an external sound source in stereo into it and modulate it like a fourth ocillator. I tried playing a cd with techno beats through the external ins, and I got some amazing sounds. And if you really wanna' have full sound building cspability of the Voyager, then go ahead and buy the optional VX-351 patch bay, and this will allow you to assign modulation sources to destinations with patch cords, just like the Moogs worked in the 60's! This synthesizer is a beautiful hand-built, boutique instrument, and all the famous music greats from Joe Walsh to Jordan Rudis play a Voyager. It has been used on more records than any other synth in the world. Roger O'Donnell keyboardist for "The Cure" recently released a solo album, playing every song on it with just one Voyager synth. The album is called "The Truth In Me". The Moog Voyager is a piece of analog history, available to us in modern times. If you enjoy playing analog or digital keyboard synthesizers your recordings and stage performances will take on a whole new life with one of these. You owe it to yourself to buy a Voyager! close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

John Grabowski
The Minimoog is arguably the de facto standard by which all analog synths are measured. There's just no substitute for the real thing, and Moog's classic 3-oscillator design and unmistakable filters are as real as it gets.

The XYA touch surface is a welcome addition allowing for even more creative variety from the monophonic Voyager. As in years past, the new Moog maintains its namesake tradition of classic soundscapes limited only to the imagination of the composer.
